Had the in-laws over and the black Knight decides it no longer wants the bumpers to work..Ran it though the self diagnostic and when it finally cycled thru to the bumpers nothing happens.. I'm trying to figure out how to get to the advanced portion to pulse a current to the specific bumpers but havent quite figured that out yet..Anyone have any suggestions?

..I've also noticed that when it is sitting idle for a bit while in a game it will intermitedly award points even though nothing is being used..

EDIT: Went back and played with the leafs a little, the game will give points but no solenoid action..maybe its not getting power to the solenoids some how?

Are the thumper bumpers the only solenoids not working? You can look for a fuse on the underside of the playfield, some pins have one or two under there.

yep, they are the only ones..I'll take a look for the fuses..

They should run in the coil test for the machine. If you can get to the test, it will cycle through all the coils, including the jet bumpers.

yeah, I got it through the initial test where it tests everything including the coils for the bumper...no coil action when that happened. I think there is an advanced test where you can try to charge individual coils, I just hadn't been able to get that far yet

Use a DMM to check for power on the coil legs, then trace the power wire back if it's missing.

sounds like either a fuse popped or a wire broke somewhere.

Report back with results.

found a blown fuse..cant find the correct ones at radio shack so I'll have to order some on line

A blown fuse could just be bad luck, or it could be doing it's job. While you wait is a good time to do some additional diagnostics to see if anything is out of order. A quick visual inspection is a good start, look for scorching on the transistors, or on the flyback diode if equipped. Also check that none of the coils are discolored from overheating and all move freely.

If everything checks out, try pulling another fuse from the PF with the same rating (odds are there is at least one) and swapping it in, then re-run the coil test. If your jet bumpers now work and continue to work through multiple tests, odds are you're fine.

And if you just blow another fuse, you now know
1) There's something else wrong
2) You're going to need more fuses....

Thanks for the advice! Will do...

On a side note does any one know how a ceramic fuse acts diffrently then a regular? I could find the regular at radio shack but not the ceramic..I figured better safe then sorry and wait a few days to get the ceramic.

Ceramics are generally used in high voltage/current situations... I'm not familiar with that pin or MFG but I don't see any reason why that fuse needs to be, or even should be ceramic. What was it rated for?

seems fine.

You don't need to use ceramics for this application. Just make sure you're grabbing the right fuse type, solenoid power lines are probably slow blow.

went and swapped out the fuse with the known good fuse directly below it. same rating with the exception of it not being ceramic. the bumpers work but points are ramdomly awarded for no reason. I'm hopefull this will be fixed once BOTH fuses are in place. At the very least, I know the bumpers not working was a result of the bad fuse.

Did a visual inspection of the boards and did not see anything out of the ordinary, so thats good.

The random points are probably a switch just a bit too close. Check the switches that award the same amount as the random amount given.
