I just came back inside and found this thread bumped. ThanksIt's amazing people can put this much energy into cap kits. Go outside and touch grass.
Bob Roberts to me is like Lauren Green or maybe Ed McMahon, I'm a big fan, but, I don't use his caps anymore just as I don't buy Alpo anymore.per OP's title, is it Bob Roberts himself that's dog food, or the parts? if the former, kinda mean![]()
OK. I'm gonna give you my 2 cents. Bob Roberts is a Legend. I have been ordering from him for 25yrs. I once ordered a centipede wiring harness and he shipped it before payment with a note saying he thought I would like to get started on my project. I have never gotten anything from him that was bad. Plus he is a wealth of knowledge. I have owned over 300+ games in my collecting time, and I can count the number of Cap Kits I have ever done on 2 hands. Zaxxon Sound capped (Known Problem), A couple of monitors, an ARii board, a squalk and talk in a pinball. I fixed a monitor a few months back with Bob's help and it only needed a SINGLE CAP to fix it, not a full cap kit. Why we continue to "FIX" (cap kit) working things is beyond me. Firstly, older caps were made of better quality than new Chinese junk. Secondly, you just risk messing something up by soldering and unsoldering 40 and 50 year old equipment (traces get lifted, other components get damaged etc) There are known issues with some games that need fixing, sound on space invaders, sound on zaxxon, hum on Nintendo games etc. And some monitors do legitimately need cap kits. But I've seen MANY where cap kits were done and they were made worse. Cap kits taking out flybacks etc (Find me a decent flyback today), Cap kits done and monitors don't work at all after. Every repair is a risk to make a mistake or cause damage. My motto is If it Aint Broke, Don't Fix it.
How many people have ALL of their games up and running??? I do. 20+ at last count. Do I need to do an occasional repair (yes) Like right now my monitor on my asteroids takes some time to WARM UP. Starts all squished and then fixes itself after about 30 seconds. Probably a Cap or Transistor problem. Am I going to replace them all when I fix it. Hell NO! I'm not shotgunning parts just to see if I can fix it. I will look at the part of the circuit that is the problem and replace the parts I need to in that circuit. Leaving the rest of the working stuff just the way it is, WORKING. There is no way you can tell me a CAP has a known expiration date, it's just BS. If they did we would be cap kitting everything on the planet over and over and over. My Atari 2600 Still Works, My Colecovision, Still Works, My Apple IIE, My Commodore 64, my handheld collection, my 80s Component Stereo System, all of my arcade games etc. SO you can buy your sketchy new parts and keep soldering away when you don't need to. I'll stick with what is known. Knowledge from someone who has been in the business and collecting longer than me. Good Service. Etc.
there are several ways to factor the life span of electrolytic capacitors life time is rated in hours. some could be 5000 hours and some could be 10000 hours many will last much longer than their rated life. there are many factors that effect the long term life of electrolytics.OK. CARGUMENT. Yeah. I think of them like car oil. There is a count down on not only age, but mileage. And also variable of weather and how you drive. Just cause your car sits, doesnt mean the oil is not breaking down. Or in this case a cap with a game shut off.there are several ways to factor the life span of electrolytic capacitors life time is rated in hours. some could be 5000 hours and some could be 10000 hours many will last much longer than their rated life. there are many factors that effect the long term life of electrolytics.
1. the way there are used in circuit. imagine if a cap were intentionally charged and 50% discharged say 60 times per second to create a sine wave out of a square wave or something like that. now compare that to a capacitor that is nearly 100% charged all the time.
2. ambient temperature. electrolytics will degrade faster at higher temperatures
3.sitting not in use yes just sitting not in use will damage the plates. this is why some use a reforming process on old radios.
4.electrotlye leakage
unfortunately the if it aint broke don't fix it method doesn't work here. i used to be a tech for A+ amusements and i constantly had to repair 1 year old monitors that have 8000 hours on them. they would come in to the shop with 3-4 failed caps at once. if you want to replace one cap on your home use only monitor so be it but if you don't want service calls every week on the same monitor you replace all caps.
8000 Hours in a year means the monitors are running 21hrs a day? I doubt it.there are several ways to factor the life span of electrolytic capacitors life time is rated in hours. some could be 5000 hours and some could be 10000 hours many will last much longer than their rated life. there are many factors that effect the long term life of electrolytics.

i can see you have never operated machines before lol8000 Hours in a year means the monitors are running 21hrs a day? I doubt it.
How dare you question arcadejason. Literally an arcade named jason. This arcade is so advanced, it even has its own username and can type on klov. It may or may not have feelings.
It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!
