I'm playing NBA JAM:TE right now, and damn the AI is annoying. The game keeps having my cpu partner make 'mistakes' to win, safe shots are missed for no reasons; everytime I manage to get a +10 points lead on the other team, the other team starts doing 3 points on demand..

What other games have this? I know that mid '90 midway games all feature that AI that can mysteriously catch up to you...

I saw the title and assumed the thread was about NBA Jam or Mortal Kombat... both have cheap AIs, but both can still be a lot of fun.

There was a backgammon game back in the Apple II days that was notorious for cheating. The computer player would get 4-6 double six die rolls per game you and the human player might get one. Probably designed that way to help compensate for sloppiness in the AI but the effect wasn't subtle, nor did it go unnoticed.

LOL the cheapness of NBA JAM! Gotta love the miracle 4th quarter come back that the computer always tries to pull off. Hahaha......

Don't know how many buzzer beaters the computer would pull off from full court either. Has to be one of the top 5 cheating games of all time!

" From full cou.. at the buz....Ohhhh my! *crowd* 3pts! The Mavericks WIN!"

I believe there is an option to disable the CPU from using cheat tactics to keep the game close.

Last time I played the arcade game or MAME version, the first thing I do is go into the game settings and disable that option.
I think it is CPU Assistance or something like that.

I too had a sneaky suspicion this was the game you were talking about just based on the thread title. Wait until you start playing against the programmers!

All midway games do this. Blitz and Showtime are just as bad!

UMK3 is the worst. Computer waits for you to make a move, then does a counter move BEFORE your original move to beat you to the punch. And there's nothing like the computer doing a special move against you that requires forward joystick movements while the computer is walking backwards... :(

When playing Jam I get nervous with any big lead and I can usually get up by 20 to 30 on the cpu. I try to play as mean as I can on defense knowing I won't be scoring much at all. If they still start their comeback, I can sometimes weather the storm and pull away late in the 4th.

Ive always said if you are good at NBA Jam with CPU assistance ON you are a great video game player, period.

Its dumb how bad that game cheats.

LOL yep. This is why like others have said. Turn off CPU assist. <--- exactly what it does, it assists the CPU side to win. You also have to start the 4th with like a 20-30 point lead and maintain it, like you I also get nervous that the computer will pull its worst to pull a win. I would just sit and fake the CPU out and go for 3pt jumpers all day for as long as I can get away with it. Because no matter what, you will out of nowhere bounce it off the rim wide open or not.

The worst loss that made me more mad then a buzzer cheater. Was when I ran down court with the buzzer about to blow. I had both CPU guys on the ground and I was ready to shoot the ball with a buzzer beater myself. However for some reason my player decided to jump 60ft in the air in that slow motion dunk and the time blew out with me still in mid air just starting to come back down. I just wanted to shoot the ball, and I even let go of the turbo, but still managed to do a super dunk for no apparent reason loosing the game.

Midway AI has nothing on my 30 game win streak in Maximum Hangtime.

I had to replace the battery on my NBA Jam and haven't played it much since then. When I fired it up recently I was shocked to see that I had only played one game since replacing the battery. I had a pretty good streak going at one point and had a 100-26 record against the cpu.

What fun is that though?

I love a challenge hence my nickname. But when it become blatantly cheating then there is no fun in that either. NBA is hard, and can be really cheap at times. Leaving the CPU assist on crosses the line of hard fun to, crappy cheap.

Can we get the CAX photo from 2009 with AvidGeek, Jow and Special Ed playing this (sorry 4th person, I do not remember you)? :D Playing the computer without the "cheating AI" is like playing a team permanently handicapped by Special Ed. /thread over

I think the 4th player was Full Throttle. Good times.
I can always win over the AI with CPU assist on... it's called the power plug. Just pull that fu@ker, AI will never see it coming. mwhoohahhhahahaaaaaa

you need a lead and to waste time in the 4th quarter, run around in the back court as long as you can then pass across court and have the pc put up a quick shot. this usually works for me.

NBA Jam is notorious for having the AI rubberband so badly. I read somewhere that the developers programmed it so that the games would be close, like a 2-3 point difference by the end. If you're too far ahead, your shots will miss and it'll make you screw up.

Apparently, if you play against the Pistons as the Bulls, in high-risk situations, the Bulls would never get their shots in.

Midway's AI is really, really bad with cheating. I can't play Mortal Kombat II. The Arcade, PS3, and Midway Arcade Treasures version all have unfairly difficult AI, that WILL duck under every projectile, and uppercut you from the knocked down animation.

It's a shame because it really makes it look like the developers just made the AI cheat instead of making them legitimately challenging. It gives off a feeling of unprofessionalism when something like that occurs, even if it's unavoidable.
