Good point. I guess nobody complained until it was too late. Just like how nobody complained about how I rollerbladed over to the convenience store to buy some Puffs kleenexes and xerox some forms. I realize those aren't offensive terms, but the same principal applies. Something similar might be "bloody" which has a blasphemous origin, but nobody cares anymore so it's not a "bad word" to people today like G-D is.

I am a Jew. This is my 2nd time wanting to post to this thread. The 1st time I was quite willing to go off on a tirade. The fact of the matter is just because this guy is an idiot does not excuse his intent. I am more than willing to go and break all the windows in his trailer. Then he would have a reason not to like me as person. It would not excuse him from not liking an entire group of people. Rant off

If someone is ignorant they live in the trailer? Talk about stereo type! A client of mine is a doctor and Jewish. We talk on a regular basis and I used that term to him. He took no offense. Why should he? In all aspects how that slang came about IS the stereo type that Jews are rich bankers that barters for everything. I rather be be Jew than someone using the phrase 'I nigger rigged the muffler with a coat hanger'. Also many use the term Gerry rigged at the expense to Germans.

I can take offense at things very easily too.. I look at the true intention. This guy had no racial intention in his words. Your response did! I'm just glad that I educated myself by asking those 'touchy' question. Black old timer can really give you a great history lesson to the start of stereotyping phrases. The lessons were quite interesting too.

Kevin, I am guilty of being caustic to make point. The fact that your friend was not offended is off the point. The phrase was not directed at him. You and he were discussing
it in 3rd person.

Only expression I used I can see offensive is nigger rigging. That word is associated with hate. BUT when you see blacks calling each other that, they are telling society they accept the association with that word. I take no offense if someone use the term Gerry rig. I rather they use that and get to the point than try and be politically correct and confusing me what they are trying to say. I do live in a trailer on my land in the boonies.. I took no offense to that. I understood your point, and that is all that matters

More we ignore phrases, slangs, and words the less effectiveness they have for hatred use. Long as we keep taking offense to everything, we will never go forward as a society.

I'm Jewish too and I also take offense to that term because it IS offensive whether you believe so or not.

Jews have been discriminated against and persecuted for thousands of years and this happens to be one of the stereotypes that led to persecution of Jews since the middle ages. In many countries Jews were only allowed into a few trades because of discrimination, and lending and handling money was one of the lowest professions around, the profession that no one else wanted. That's obviously changed since then but for a thousand years that was hurled as an insult and the stereotype led to a fair amount of violence against Jews.

Many Jews are offended by this term and you're not going to change that by saying that they shouldn't be.

Regarding the original poster of the craigslist ad -- I'm guessing by the context that he is clueless and didn't understand. I let people know when they use the term around me and inevitably I get, "I never thought about what that meant and I'm sorry if I offended you and I won't do it again".

I'd rather educate people out of the hurtful stereotypes than pretend they don't exist.

TY, your response I liked. People should be able to discuss racial/ethnic things without fear of being labeled. No offense, but I know I will be guilty of 'Jew down' remark. Forum did give me another phrase that I am catching myself using 'low-ball'. I was aware of the jews labeled with money handling. Myself and others outside of Jewish circle see that phrase equal to irsh drunks. Irish are not offended (in fact proud). That is the attitude we all need to take. In your case, Jews were about ahniliated yet here we are today with jewish population growing and prospering. You should take that phrase that jews are seen as wealthy intelligent people. I guess my point is we have to be be above these things or else we feed into the hate supporters. Just like jews have big noses.. why should that be offensive.. who really gives a crap if it is true or not. I hope you see my message. I know it's not easy, but to end hate you have to take their power away and things like this is exactly what they feed off of. It is all about making you feel less.. if you are above it, you just away their weapon

That could be, but nevertheless, Jews by and large will be offended by that term and you telling them that they shouldn't be isn't going to get you any farther than you telling black folks that they shouldn't be offended by "nigger".

Bottom line: what's important isn't whether you are offended by something or whether you think someone should or shouldn't be offended by it. It's whether THEY will feel offended and I can say that many, many Jews will be offended by this. If you don't want to offend, then you should choose another term.

By all means, we don't disagree.. The way current society is, yes.. it would be offensive to jews All I am saying, we need to be better than that and not let those weapon of hate bother us or else we keep the fuel burning for them.
