I picked up an original DK last summer which after a few months I decided I wanted to get the D2K complete kit to install. Then right about the same time I was getting the kit in the mail, there was a D2K that popped up on CL which I worked a trade and got it - it has all new D2K artwork (PCB is the 2 board version) except the sides which are original DK. So I left the D2K kit in the box thinking no rush, get to it when I have time...

Well, Just last night I finally got around to trying to install the $79 arcadeshop.com Braze D2K complete kit (w/HSS) and as a result I seem to have created some issues, here is what I have going on:

1. The DK was all in good working order before I installed the kit.

2. I followed the directions on the web site http://www.arcadeshop.com/konghs_dk2/konghighscorekitinstallation.htm

3. My board set looks a little different (see pic 1) then on the website, but should still be ok.

4. DK boardset is the 4pc version and the 40 pin Z80 chip is socket style (see pic 2).

5. One of the legs bent on the 40 pin Z80 chip when I tried to install into the D2K daughter board. I straightened it back out (could not see any physical damage) and re-installed.

6. There is a cap that sticks out to the left of the socket (see pic 2) that barely clears the daughter board.

7. The D2K daughter board is installed as far as it can go (see pic 3).

8. When I turned it on, the first thing I noticed there was not the menu that is supposed to start, it just starts up like the original DK.

9. Then I noticed that the only sounds I have are DK jumping, Mario moving and jumping. Not "how high can you get" music, no hammer sounds, etc.

10. I unlugged the D2K board and reset the Z80 chip back the original setup. Now it also has the same sound issues. I saw another thread someone mentioned the 8035 chip at 7H might be failing, but did not see a response if that fixed it or not.

So now I'm left trying to figure some stuff out and need some input:

Any Suggestions to fix the sound problem?

Is there something I might have missed on the settings for the D2K to actually work?

Did I mess up the Z80 chip, if yes what can I do to fix/replace it?

Anyone else set their D2K in a board like mine - how they get it working?

Thanks in advance for your insight.....

-Kris

Don't know anything at all about D2K, but I believe that your sound problems are unrelated. I think while you had the board out, you must have flexed it enough to make the 8035 make poor contact. Try reseating it/cleaning the legs.

If you damaged the Z80, the game wouldn't play at all.

I think you have it installed in the wrong place. Looking at the parts list for a TKG3 boardset, the Z80 is on the cpu board not the sou board. It looks like you pulled the music chip and installed it there which would make sense why you have no sound and it didn't boot up to the menu screen. Pull the sound board off and you should see the z80 on the cpu board. It needs to be installed there and then for clearance you'll have to move the sou board over a bit. - Barry

You may have fried the music processor, not sure about the D2K kit.

Timberterror is correct, you installed the D2K kit on the sound board, for easier checkout you can set the sound board aside and deal with the D2K kit first, after verifying that the kit is working correctly you can add the sound board, mount it on the top four standoffs as opposed to the bottom four, I doubt that you damaged the sound cpu, they will normally take insertion into a Z80 socket without harm.

Thanks for the info !

Thanks guys for your help.

First - OOPS! I did't even notice it was the sound board that I was messing with.

Second - Cleaning the legs of the chip worked like a charm, now all of the sound is back!

Third - After pulling the sound board I found the correct Z80 chip, unfortunately it is the soldered in place version:( , I think I'll just keep it original for now...

Fourth - If I can figure out how to give you guys +1 Rep point I will....

Thanks again for helping out a rookie's mistake!

Good to hear the music processor is still working. If you buy a new z80 and a socket, it's not that bad to install.

I try to help, but Dick is the real expert on this stuff. - Barry
