What's the best method for this?
I just got a Gauntlet CPO from Arcade Overlays, it looks great, but is not die-cut and I knew it wasn't.
The button holes aren't a huge deal, as the button will cover them up. The joystick holes are another story and need to be cut perfect as the stick and dust cover sit underneath the panel.

Do you guys trace using the control panel then use an exacto? drill bit?

Cut it from above or below? Seems below would be better, as you could stay right on the edges.

I'm going to tackle this tomorrow night, and pictures will definitely be coming.

My centipede cabaret repro overlay came without holes too. I mounted it on the CP without the holes, then pressed down from the top lightly so it "indented" a little. Then with an exacto blade, I poked a hole in the center, proceeded to cut out to the edge, then in a circle using the metal CP hole as a guide. Worked like a charm.

I cut from above and use the side of the blade to stay right against the edge of the hole.

+1. I have also started (well, OK, I did it once) using the Hongkong Fooie Tools hole punch for the larger holes and that did a real nice job. It is designed to cut through steel so it made quick work of the CPO. The hard part would be getting it lined up exactly with the holes in the CP but, I did the CPO first and then drilled the CP so it worked out.

I use one of these...

Bought it a few years ago when I was into RC cars, I used it to cut out the wheel holes in the car bodies.

no worries

I just did CPO on a Dynamo CP with several holes and 2 sticks, and we basically applied it and then cut the holes from the bottom side for the buttons and joysticks. From the top would totally fine if your light is good and you can easily make out the existing holes on the CP itself. And like others said, a new blade on the x-acto is critical. My new blade went dull mid way through cutting the CPO itself and I replaced it. Good luck!
