I've seen a few custom pins that are basically conversions from a different themed pin into something else like the Futurama that was an old Superman on the web a few years back. It was cool but I'd like to see something with more modifications. Anyone ever done this?

Has anyone ever made a modern pin conversion such as a game with a custom DMD and interactions etc? I've always wanted a Goonies pin which of course would be a custom job. I'd want it to at the very least have custom sounds from the movie. How difficult would this be? I'm just curious as to if this is even possible for someone to do without being in a pinball factory.

It can be done, but it is not trivial. There was a guy in the last few years that did a full conversion of something into an ACDC machine. It came out really well.

There are a few groups (myself included) working on homebrew pinball machine systems, but there is a LOT of stuff that goes into the backgroung of a machine.

You know, I've always wondered if you could get ahold of someone like Lyman Sheets and commission them to totally rework the software side to make a custom machine. Then hire a graphic designer to make a playfield overlay and the rest of the art package. As long as it is a one-off machine for a private party, there shouldn't be a legal problem.

You could definitely do it. I would expect the cost to be at least $20K for a finished product. At that stage you might as well make a few of them. Then you can lose tens of thousands and have your buyers make thousands just like Gene Cunningham ;)

I'm working on a CPU replacement (just the motorola 6800. Not the whole board) for the bally/stern system right now that will have a computer interface allowing you to basically use the computer as a sound card but I'm about 6 months away from a finished product and even then it won't be trivial for the average individual. The nice thing about a CPU replacement for the 6800 is that most pinball systems are based on that processor and it's later variants so theoretically the board could be used to replace the CPU in most pinball machines.

It seems like there are a lot of people working on systems like this but very few actually release any kind of product.

I love homebrew pinball but it's a shitload of work.

I did the cabinet art for the Coconut Island Pinball. That was custom built and runs on a PC. They had already hand painted the PF and plastics before they asked me to do the cab art.

They are already building 2 more custom pins, 1 based on Ghosts 'n' Goblins Arcade game and the other is a secret. I will be doing the entire art package, cab, PF, plastics, backglass etc this time.

And I am already doing the art for my own custom pin based on Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth and the Monster Hot Rods he created.

Ghosts n goblins pinball!! omg god that is awesome! You guys did an amazing job on coconut island as well, I was following its progress for quite awhile. I'd love to try it someday. Good luck on the future projects and keep us posted here!
