This project has ended up on multiple threads without any real focus so I am starting a new one for this project. Now that I have a almost mint Galaxian, I am even more motivated to finish this project so I can have a Galaxian/Galaga/Gaplus/Galaga '88 row.

Thread about the Galaxian cabinet that will become the new home to Galaga '88

Thread looking for better scan of flyer:

Here are the two possible designs I am considering:

Full vinyl side art:

Natural wood with graphics stenciled with polyurthane mixed with black light dye:

I am keeping the Galaxian control panel and bezel, they are too nice to not use, and work well.

The full vinyl side art looks much nicer Tighe. This will look nice with the rest of the machines.

LOL could it be that you know who I was going to ask to cut the stencil for the stenciled version. Did you see the blacklight
tests?

I think a sticker the size of the original galaga side art would look best. Full side art for something like that just looks gaudy

That was the original plan:

I like the stencil, but don't think the natural wood grain goes with the rest of the design. I do like that pink color though - it makes it really pop! How about a light grey color for the sides that would compliment the rest of the game and still provide a good contrast for the sides and the associated stencils. Can't wait to see it!

I'm not feeling the white t mold or the white Namco logo...maybe green t mold and no logo but some kickplate art..cool idea all around. Good job.

Agree.
Maybe just the bug and maybe the rest of it's swarm flying would look cool.

I have already considered all those ideas, it is going to be one of the first two, and that comes down to if I can get a 1200 dpi scan of the flyer. I haven't had much luck with that.

no matter what you decide it will be the coolest 88 out there... I would be interested in an art set if you print extras... I love the marquee especially.

Did you use a heatgun and peel that side art off, or is that some kind of chemical reaction that makes the artworks peel in that manner? And a lot of those are really cool, I wonder what the stencil on white would look like.

Well I am going to have Rich or GOG print the vinyl for me, so I am sure they could print a set for you too once I send them the artwork.

Well, interesting you ask. I found that the vinyl was so old that it was very brittle and hard to get off with a heat gun. Then I tried a hot scraper. Both were very difficult.

Finally I figured out that if I put on Citristrip on the cabinet and let it sit a few days then pour acetone on top of that, then scrape off the paint then pour on more acetone that it would soften the vinyl where I could peel it off on large sheets. Acetone is awesome for removing vinyl. Just look how easily it comes off here. It was like shards of glass before.

That wood is goregeous!
I think the art should be stenciled on with orange, red, or grey personally and the front be stenciled, too.

Digging the black light powders. Are they paint or just enhance paint; and where did you get them from?

That is why I was having second thoughts about covering that beautiful birch plywood. But it looks like I am getting the flyer to scan now, so it will be covered now. :)

That is actually a cosmetic dye that is oil soluble. I first tried mixing it with natural wood stain, which worked, but I found it worked a million times better mixed with polyurethane.

I really liked the black side with orange bee.

Everyone has a favorite, but I have to pick something. :D That black side was supposed to be ebony wood stain.

Painting this Weekend

Hopefully if the weather and children co-operate I will be painting this cabinet this weekend. The center and inside will be black and the sides white. The white on the sides is under coat for the side art.

I got the power supply installed and JAMMA harness pretty much done, enough to make sure the monitor works.

The image is upside down in this photo, I just had to turn off flipping in the settings, which is done now:

Bundling your harness like Bob suggests makes things way easier!

Too many cool projects. Galaga '88 is one of those games I'd really love to get someday. I'll be keeping my eye out on the resto thread once you get around to it.
