Custom black Pac-Man restoration

For sure BYOAC material, looks like you ruined a good survivor. Is that an 8 way black base wico that you installed?

good day.

Sorry you don't like it.

It's a temporary 4 way joystick so I could test everything out while I'm waiting on a used original I finally found at a reasonable price online.

The game didn't work, it needed a monitor, and was on it's way to the dump. But I "ruined it" by getting it working and painting a beat cabinet black that was otherwise going to be thrown out? (It's also one of the most common cabinets in the world, there are tens of thousands of these).

Geez, lighten up.

mmm i don't think you can call it a restoration maybe more reimagining, restoration would of been to restore it to its original factory state.

i would like it more if you actual bought or made a new cabinet instead of using an original one.

just my 2 cents. [your game and you can do whatever you want to it.]

So it would have been better to just let this one get thrown out instead?

Tough crowd.

When you did the work on the bottoms of the cabinet did you cut off the damaged part and attach new material, wood filler then sand, or drywall spackle then sand?

I'm considering using szabo for my artwork. How was the application process? Is it a one shot or you're screwed material?

Anyway, looks pretty badass. Have fun with it!

Putting a little paint, vinyl and different colored t molding on a Pacman, that can be easily be changed? Ruined? Lol.

It's his machine, he can do whatever he wants to it. When it's yours, you can "ruin" it with yellow latex house paint from Home Depot.....far from factory original.

I did something similar for Ms. Pac based on one of the original development sketches :

Thanks. The cabinet damage wasn't bad enough to have to cut out. I used bondo to fill in the bad spots. I'm a professional house painter, I would say definitely don't use spackle, I don't think it would hold up well. After bondo I used oil based primer followed by oil based satin black paint to give the vinyl a good surface to stick to.

The artwork is heavy duty and high quality. I used the "kind of wet" method to apply it, meaning I sprayed the cabinet just enough to be a little wet. I only had to peel the vinyl back at all once, and it was very forgiving. Not sure how forgiving it is dry, I imagine it's pretty forgiving. It went on very easy for me. It was very easy to work with, and the few air bubbles I got came right out.

I was worried about vinyl looking cheesy or having a cheap, plastic look, but the matte black looks really great, you can't even tell it's vinyl. It looks as good as I could have hoped for. I wouldn't hesitate to order artwork from Joe, very nice quality, and a nice guy.

Wow. I like this.
Different. But. Well done.

Biggest question....does it get played now by the family? If yes, it's a winner in my book!

Dont let some of the grumps on here get under your skin, it looks sharp. I caught flack for putting pink t-molding on my ms pac restoration and was told it wasn't a restoration since I didnt use the exact factory molding.

Thanks, maybe I should do a pink Tron multicade next time to see if I can make their heads explode :)

Not really a tough crowd and i'm not saying you didnt do a good job but you do know you joined "The Vintage Preservation Society" right ;)

The thing is though... He did preserve it... It was a junked (very common) cabinet that was going to the dump. So he grabbed it and preserved it. Yes it does have different artwork that is tastefully done. Would you rather it go in the trash instead of this? Would you say that the folks that used a vinyl wrap that had the normal colors applied is not preserving since Pac-Man should have stenciled artwork?

You kind of act like he gutted it, threw an LCD screen in and a 60-1 and called it restored.

just saying he would get more praise from reddit or byoac forum then hardcore collector/restorer.

but you seem to miss my original reply i did say it was his game and he could do what ever he wanted to it.

I think preservation can be (and is) interpreted differently by each of us... for me, I believe if anything that we do helps keep a new generation interested in this hobby then we are all on the same team with the same core objective.

For some it's preserving the integrity of the original cabinet, hardware etc... for others it's preserving the excitement and fascination of playing the games themselves.

It's all preservation.

Well said. Thank you.
