If there were detailed specs of the Cube Quest cabinet, would anyone be interested enough in a replica to build a replica cabinet and use MAME to run it? Obviously, it wouldn't have the value of a real one, but does anyone find it that interesting?

I've watched videos of it on Youtube and the background video looks almost creepy to me.

A KLOV member who has a crumbling Cube Quest cabinet and would probably be interested in one (can't remember his username right now) and maybe one more KLOV member joemagiera might be interested in a cab as well.

Keep bumping this post would be my suggestion.

I think it's a great game. Where would you get the detailed specs for the cabinet?

Oh sorry if I worded it poorly. I have no idea. I haven't found many pictures of the thing online even. I just think IF there were specs or a cabinet was copied, it might be worthwhile to just have running in emulation. The whole package seems like eye candy.

I'd say there's at least 5 collectors who would be up for something like that depending on price. It's a great game that truly needs to be played and seen more often, especially at CAX. Would be nice to have someone nail down a true emmulation of it with the laser background intact.

My initial post made it sound like I was planning on making something. I was just curious if others found the cabinet interesting and like the idea of building a replica. I do. If anyone ever did spec out the cabinet, it looks like some would be interested. I realize though that would be a lot of work for someone with the cabinet, and really, how many people even have access to one?

I was planning on making one a few of years ago, but the cabinet I would have had access to was sold. I have a basic layout but need exact measurements to finish the plans.

Unfortunately there are lots of custom metal parts that would need to be made, like the control panel.

Since it is playable in MAME, I really want to make one now, and am kicking myself for not taking advantage when the cabinet was local to me.

Crrrrrrrrrap...wish you had finished plans. That's cool though..

Just wouldn't look as good in a generic cabinet!

Bah! Who would sell a Cubes Quest!? The guy must be a complete dumbass...

I have 2 cabs that have been jamma-tized. One of them is barley standing up. I would be willing to loan you the cab if you are serious about doing this. LMK.

You're welcome.

Really? Are you responsible for adding this to MAME?

I couldn't contain myself when it was finally included in MAME. But having to wait 2-3 days for downloading the almost 11GB CHD torrent was a bit frustrating.

A huge thanks for any involvement you had in that project!

I didn't get that when Joe posted 'you're welcome'. Well, thanks Joe. I look fwd to playing it when I get time to set it up in MAME.

I am partly responsible. In the overall picture, I guess a small part. The MAME and Daphne developers only had a partial ROM dump and no laser disc image. I picked up a game and did a complete ROM dump for the both teams. I loaned my disc to another guy that did a high resolution image capture (actually, he's still working on even a higher resolution capture). Cube Quest was the first laser disc game that MAME supported. Pretty good choice on their part I think. There were a few MAME developers involved and Aaron did a lot of the laser interface stuff, but it was Phil Bennett that wrote the actual MAME drivers for this game.

I really hope there is a higher rez transfer of the disc in the works cuz the one they are using in MAME is poo poo.

Yes, Warren is working on getting a capture using, what is it, one of those Japanese high end red lasers or blue lasers or something like that. He has discussed it on DLP.
