Picked this up recently and the trackball works mostly but has an annoying habit of stopping and not going the way you want it in Certain situations. I know about the rebuild kit and looked online at troubleshooting trackball and it looks like this games bearings and rollers are in nice shape. I lubed the rollers and the trackball is worse now than it was before. Is it as simple as ordering the kit or could this be another problem altogether?

If you're really picky about them, the only way to roll is with a new trackball. probably cost 80 bucks or so with the translucent red ball like original.

You can replace the rollers and bearings, but all it takes is 1 bearing to hang a little bit and the thing won't act right. Also the ball is worn.

Are your rollers straight, or do they have a groove worn into them? That's solid steel, and the ball just wore through it... imagine what has happened to the ball itself. Basically it's smaller now than it used to be, but it wears evenly so you can't tell by looking at it. If you put new rollers and bearings in it, it will work pretty good but the ball won't quite fill the case like it should, and it'll hang in certain directions just slightly, or wobble a little bit to the side instead of rolling smoothly.

So it just depends on how 'nice' you want it to be. New rollers and bearings would help. New rollers, bearings, and ball would be pretty good, and new assembly would be perfect.

BTW, what do you mean by you lubed the rollers? do you mean the bearings (the circles on the end, with balls inside?)

Depending on how deep of a groove the trackball has made in the rollers, you may want to try to rebuild with new bearings and rollers. My Crystal Castles trackball was pretty gunked up when I got it, however, it hadn't dug too far into the steel rollers, so I'm assuming the ball itself was pretty much the original size. I ordered the new bearings and rollers, used the original ball and housing, and it's felt amazing for the last couple of years. I also recently played a CC with what was obviously a new trackball in it and it didn't feel right.

However, on the flip side of this, I also tried to rebuild my original Centipede trackball with new rollers and bearings and it did not seem to be better at all. Decided to just go with a whole new trackball and it plays perfect.

Whichever way you decide to go, you definitely need a smooth trackball in there or the game just isn't as fun!
