Crystal Castles Free Play + Attract

Interesting. I guess I could have drain bramage but I thought it just sits at the press 1 or 2 player screen. Guess I will have to test it further.

I just tested the 3 versions in MAME, and all 3 sit there at the freeplay screen without ever drawing Bentley or the crystals in attract mode.

open the coin door, switch the self test switch, and change it on the menu screen. done

The idea here is to have freeplay WITH attract mode active.

If you set it for freeplay, then you lose attract mode. When in freeplay mode the same image just sits on the screen. Works great if you want to get image burn on the monitor in a hurry :D

Just verifed with my machine. Freeplay keeps the first castle image on the screen with freeplay flashing and always has 2 credits. Same thing happens in non freeplay mode. If a credit is added, it sits on the first castle screen showing the number of credits -- does not continue through the attract mode screens.

Just kinda wondering if anyone did a ROM hack that bypasses this "feature".

I actually started working on this awhile ago, but I got busy with some other projects so it got put on the backburner. I'd never worked with 6502 code before, so it was done just as a learning exercise. I don't even own a Crystal Castles. :) (although I want one) I have some of the disassembled code commented and most of the relevant memory locations identified, but there's still a ways to go in figuring out the subroutines and program flow. I should actually start working on this again. If anyone here has experience with 6502 stuff, or ROM hacks in general and would like to collaborate on this, please let me know.
