Cruis'n USA with an LED monitor!! pics, video

How is it mounted in the cabinet?

Thats the advantage of using a tv, because it is made for mounting to a wall. I just made a simple mount that i bolted to the tv's mount, then bolted it to the cabinet bolts that used to hold the original minitor. it was simple because two of the cabinet bolts are exactly in the center, making centering the tv very easy. as far as setting the depth. I just got lucky in that this tv fit perfectly, with the original bezel placed in front of it before the glass.

How?!

I have had no luck getting vga converters to work with med res monitors. Both narc and cruisin use med res and the both look great .....for a while, then they fade to a solid color after like 15mins. When I reset the converter it looks great then blank...have tried 2...same brand (from jammaboards.com). what kind of converter did you use and where did you get it? I hate messin with this med res crap. I know you know what I mean...If it looks nice who cares how pure it is...I have used them in other games even ms pacman...guess what looks awesome!!! oooo you think cause it's a TV not a pc monitor

You need to adjust the clamp ST, there is a reply in this thread explaining, and the converter board manual explains it. You only havta set it once, then it saves and you will be fine. Hope this helps!!

I have very little problems when using LCDs for games of this generation.

I think there is no real need for the EGA to VGA converter. Since TVs (NOT computer monitors) are made to produce picture from TV signals at 15 kHz but they can also handle the 31 kHz for VGA, it could well be that most also accept a sync that is somewhere in between.

Ain fact, Jed Margolin did this to make a video of his Hard Drivin':
http://www.jmargolin.com/schem/schems.htm#p09

Since Hard Drivin' is Med-res too this should also work for other med-res games.

The only thing you need is some resistors to lower the voltages for the VGA input.

Jed made a schematic for this you can find here: http://www.jmargolin.com/schem/vga_hd.pdf

Of course, it may depend on the TV if it will accept the signal or not. As long as you use the resistors you cant harm the TV so its worth a try for sure.

I used a Gonbes converter to test my PCB set on my TV and a computer monitor, but the board couldnt sync correctly. Although for testing it was OK, it was totally unacceptable for every day use.

I rejuved the CRT of the HD monitor, but while working on it I thought that I would have less problems with replacing the CRT monitor with an LCD for this particular game in my collection because its newer. I think the fact that these games produce full screen graphics (compared to a lot of black like the early games) also makes the step to LCD a bit easier, it looks quite good.

ok I'm intrigued, my U5000 (smoke and smell and poof!) went out on my Crusin USA upright. And its got bad burn in and as much as I don't mind bringing monitors back to life. This one seems like a pain in the ass, with all the WG mods and such I would need to do to it. So this LED LCD looks to be a great solution. And I happen to have an EGA to VGA converter board(boughten off of ebay a while ago). After seeing your Vid. I'm convinced that might just look pretty damn good.

So you got a 26"? Does this turn off and on with cab, or do you have to use a remote to turn it off and on. Not a big deal to me, just curious?

And it fits the bezel or did u have to modify it a bit? Kind of dark in the vid so I cant tell.

Whats the model of the LG exactly?

But either way, awesome. I would never LED LCD a donkey kong. But Crusin looks pretty darn good! I think this might be the better way to go!!

he picked that one BECAUSE it powers up automatically when plugged in therefore, power up the cab, tv powers up.

cool mod. I wouldnt do it to a old school game but with a newer driver like crusin i bet it looks sweet!!

Set your Clamp st to 3 and Clamp sp to 4 and it should fix that issue. I had the same thing on a GBS-8220.

Hey thank you for this suggestion. I had everything set up on my Crusin USA. And when I first turned everything on, it was all good. Then the screen would slowly get so damn White and washed out you could hardly see anything. And it was the converters fault. Changed it to the lower CLAMP settings and now its all good. Thanks again for the Tip!

Old thread I know, but I just picked up a Cruis'n and it's playing blind. Not really a fan of LCD's but in this case it seems like a great idea.

I'm curious since it's been about a year, is your's still going strong? Is this the adapter you are using?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-RGB-CGA...029?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231fa2df35

Also did you use a vesa mount, or did you fabricate your own?

I just made my own mount, not difficult. Still works perfectly, don't expect any problems either. Powers on with cabinet, maybe has 50 hours on it, all good

Did you have to wire in the included 8-pin connector, or did you have to wire into the 5-pin?

Here's the adapter I am looking at:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/cga-to-vga-...0811332212?pt=Video_Games&hash=item3cb9911a74

And here's a TV I'm thinking about:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...e=product&id=1218609331352#tab=specifications

There is just over 28" of open width inside the cabinet. This 29" TV should be a good fit, it's just under 27" wide.

Definitely think I'm going to try this. If I don't like it I can go back to the CRT, and if I do like it I can sell the old chassis & monitor bubble, maybe more.

Just want to make sure I'm getting the right pieces in before I proceed.

Had to go thru some hoops to get this LCD, but thank's to Jeremy (thebasement) who picked up this discontinued Insignia 29" LCD at Best Buy in Wentzville, he shaved a little time from my commute. It was $180 on sale and they wouldn't honor free shipping like the website claims. But this TV mounts perfectly with about half an inch to spare on each side, and the front literally hugs the glass. For a mount I simply used pegboard, expanded a few holes and cut some spaces for ventilation and for cables to feed thru. Working out great so far. This TV also powers up when the juice is applied and remembers the last channel you were at, just like the LG mentioned in this thread.

Still awaiting the EGA/VGA converter, so for now I can only test it using my N64. It's pixelated, but again you are looking at the N64 version. I'm thinking (and hoping) this won't be much of an issue with the arcade version. The color's are great, no ghosting and no motion blur.

I'll report back and put up my own little video once the converter arrives.

I'm thinking of doing this with my rush, i've spent over $300 on chassis repairs and i'm still blowing the hots every 6 months. Can't wait to see the end result.

Looks good, will you do a quick video with the arcade version? I would think it would look better than the 64. I ordered some stuff to try this in my rush 2049. I already have a 26" lcd i might try and see how it looks. I'm hoping being vga it will look great. Thanks for posting this.

The last 10 minutes of the video are the arcade version. So is the photo I posted. From my expierience alone I think it's safe to say you'd be happy with an LCD in a Rush.

Sorry about that, i kinda skipped when i saw the n64 in it. It is cool to have a cheap monitor solution that looks good and saves a ton of weight!
