Does anyone know of anyone or any company that does PCB repair to Cruis'n Exotica? The board I have here will "sometimes" load to the diagnoistic screen... at which time you can what I assume are 3 bad chips come up (shows a layout of the board with green and then 3 red locations)... it will then go to the text... the progress bar increases a bit then stops and that is where it sits.

Most of the time it just comes up with the 4 LED's (Red, Orange and two green) stay lit. The few times I've gotten it to show the diagnostic screen I noted the orange LED would blink.

I've tried +4.85 through +5.1... at a chip.

If I could get it to consistently hit the diagnostic screens that would be step in the right direction at least.

Yes, you can send it to

The guy used to work for Midway, he's the same guy on Ebay who sells the hard drives for everything. I've been buying hard drives from him for years, he ships really quick too. His phone number is on his website, you can call him and he'll have you check some things before you mail it in.

+1 for Mike he's a good dude.

The PS is twitchy... it could be just that (Here is hoping!). If I adjust the +5 while the PS is running, click... the PS/gameboard power down...

I just picked one up from ebay... I'll likely have to pick another up.

Its cool to see guys that have been displaced by shutting down or moving stay in the biz to offer help. In this case Mike and another case Ken that used to work for Sega.

Welp... I am now officially screwed.

Talked to Mike. He asked me a few questions and determined my VIS (viz?) chip is bad. Evidently that chip is NON REPAIRABLE... which means I have a $400 doorstop here.

:(

Anyone have an extra working Exotica boardset they want to sell cheap to a hatin' life bastard that just wanted a nice driver for his garage gameroom?

:(

That bites man.

Not that this will help you now but I have two Exotica's in Salinas California that I'm going to retire next year. You can have the board out of one of them if you can wait.

That's pretty damn awesome of an offer.... and if the cab is still sitting here being a doorstop next year I'll be all over it!

:D

great I wonder if you can get a Crusin USA or a Crusin World to pop in temporally? I think those are more common and work in the cab...

PS: ouch $300-$400 for a replacement on ebay but usa is around $125 and world is $150-$200

Well I'm sorry to hear about your doorstep board, that sucks. But the info on the repairs is helpful for me (or lets hope so).

I also have a Exotica board here, that for one wierd reason, will power on, and hell it even played. The problem I have is the screen seems to be greyish.. like I'm playing on a black and white screen?.. I've tested it in 3 different Cruis'n World cab's.. Monitors are fine as they play Cruis'n World in full color.

I can't see if any roms are actually bad due to the problem.

I believe Cruis `n USA and World are standard res games and Exotica has a medium res monitor in it.

That color issue sucks... I wonder if there is a color PROM that went bad?

Negatory Batman. World/USA are both medium and I believe that Exotica is Med and VGA.

Hmmm...

Anyone know if you can put a World in an Exotica then? I know the power supplies are different ... though it may be because Exotica needs more amperage.

Well 2 of the cabs I've tested it on, both have Trisync monitors.

Also I know nothing about board repairs.. still in the learning process of a lot of these things. Still haven't tracked down schematics or anything yet either to know if there is a color prom

I think you can. The exotica may have extra wiring though. Not 100% sure.

All three games are medium resolution. My USA and World cabinets came with WG U5000s in them which support dual res (not auto switching...you have to swap a connector on the chassis). Not sure what they shipped in Exotica cabinets.

I've found USA and World to be directly swappable, but the wiring and steering board is different in Exotica. Somewhere out there is a World-to-Exotica upgrade manual that explains the differences.

For what it's worth...i've always liked World better. I think you can still get a few bucks for a broken Exotica board on Ebay

I have a board that is showing similar symptoms. Could you please elaborate on what those questions were?

Basically, he said my symptoms are typical of that chip (I don't know the chip number... it's the square chip location with the heat sink... on the diagnostic screen it shows up (when the diagnostic screen comes up) below the roms around the middle leftish of the image on screen (which have the same locations on the PCB itself) being bad. Said that it's one of the non-repairable chips on the board and that basically I am screwed.
