This statement is not entirely true. The rise of flat panel TVs was not directly related to the digital conversion. The market shift was already underway due to technology and pricing trends.People tend to forget that the official switch over from analog to digital TV didn't happen until 2009 (at least in the States). That is why flat panel TV's didn't become ubiquitous until 2009-2010 time frame.
In fact, many late model CRT TVs came with digital tuners built in. (Not to mention the fact that everyone could still watch digital broadcasts on old CRT TVs using a digital-to-analog converter box.)
