CRT manufacturing equipment

We have a really amazing glass art studio and exhibit at the Chrysler Museum (Norfolk, VA). I could stare at that stuff all day. Some of it is really mind-bending and trance-inducing to look at. Hard to describe but imagine your gaze being pulled in to the edge of infinity and then a little bit further. Really cool.
 
They have these championships every year and it's all about art so she probably was trying to look good for the cameras... if you ever get a chance to watch one of those shows it's mindblowing no pun intended. They can make anything, any shape, whatever and can make it perfectly symmetrical, can put things in the glass, etc.

I think it's more likely she was taking a class. My wife and did that a few years ago and made the same type of glass ball and there wasn't a lot of safety equipment involved.
