Would it be possible to somehow cut off the front of a burned in tube?

I think it would look awesome on the wall. Ms.Pac, Tron, Galaga, etc.

Yea it's night and I had nothing better to think about. :D

I think you could, but it would be dangerous as shit. If I was going to try it, I'd neck the tube, then I'd use a dremel to attempt to cut the whole face off the glass, but man you'd have glass dust everywhere, it might shatter and cut you, etc. You could probably pull it off though.

If you've got a bunch of extras that are junk, you may be able to just break off all the glass on the sides by hitting it with a hammer, might get it clean enough that you could mount it in something but again pretty dangerous.

So ........ safety gear. Check :)

OK, neck the tube, then maybe diamond blade saw on my grinder, or just use a grinder to work my way to the front?

I don't think it's like an etch a sketch where the image disappears when you neck it, I've necked some and it screws up the front, but usually when you neck it the burn in stays as it is.

Biggest worry to me would be basically breathing in the glass dust, that's about as bad as it gets, glass in your lungs...

Is this a troll?

No and I don't really appreciate the insinuation. I am seriously thinking about doing it. I have several tube swaps with horrible burn-in. I think hanging the glass in my office would look cool.

Ok, so a good mask. Maybe after cutting it a couple of layers of triple thick on the burnt side to protect it?

Seems dangerous, maybe find someone in the area with a waterjet machine that can cut it for you?

I am sure I saw a thread somewhere that someone had done this. Maybe it was in BYOAC? Either way sounds cool.

The way I understand it, the part that gets 'burned' is basically spray painted on the back of the tube... so it's not like a dust, I think really the reason we all think it is is because we've all played with an etch a sketch, lol.

I think it's a painted on phosphorus and will stay in place, the burn in you're seeing is because that same area of the phosphorus has been burned darker in that area. The reason (I think, again don't know) it gets screwed up sometimes when you neck one is because there's an implosion inside the tube that ruins it. If you neck it and slowly let the air out like that I think you'll end up with a big empty tube with the burn in still exactly like it was....

Keep in mind also that there's some sort of metal mask in there somewhere too behind the face, never seen what it looks like.

Once you break it open, all the magic escapes, and that burn in will disappear

Tim

That is sort of true. I tossed a bad tube in the dumpster so that I didn't have to purposely vent it. The phosphorus seemed to "drain" off of the screen afterwards.

I say cut a hole in the wall and put a working monitor in there hooked up to a pcb with a frame around it. Leave it in attract mode.

Now that would be cool.
