Just posting this for a bit of archiving.

This appeared on my local CL, in Palmer, MA. (Link below, in case anyone is interested. I'm not going to archive any more than the pics though, as there isn't any info in the post except the price: )

It's for a Crowns Golf cocktail, by Sega. (VAPS here.) Pretty rare in any form, and I'm not sure if it's a factory dedicated, but it looks like it might be. There appears to be no info in VAPS about a cocktail. However I did find one other link about another one, via google:

Anyway, given that there aren't many threads or pics, I figured I'd just make a thread to archive the CL pics for any future searchers. If I had any room I'd grab this, just for fun.

Thanks for posting!

That is a dedicated Crowns Golf cocktail. They used the same style of cocktail that Midway was using around the same time (1984), and the CG upright cab was a Stern Cliff Hanger style cab.

CG was most commonly seen as a kit though, the majority of the ones I've encountered were Williams' cabs (except for the one I actually owned for a year, which was a converted Megatack by Game Plan).

Cool.

How is the gameplay? I find golf games interesting, and think they don't get enough credit. But I've never played this one. Can you say how it compares to any other golf games?

The coin door says 2 x 25 cents to play.
No wonder it's rare.
Who would pay 50 cents per play on a cocktail golf game in 1984? :D

And yes, the UR used the Cliffy-style cab. However there was also an Atari-licensed version that used a Dragon's Lair style cab (which is how I came to know this game, as I'm a #laserguy.) I'd love to find one of these. Someone dug one up here years ago, IIRC.
(Sorry for the huge pic.)

IMO, Trackball golf is the only way to go… Games like Birdie King, Golden Tee, U.S. Classic, Big Event, etc…

For me, compared to trackball golf games, the clunky and over-engineered controls for CG were/are a real turn-off.

That being said… in the mid 90s, during my U.S. Classic golf binge at a MadTown 19th hole dive bar, I did encounter a few CG UR survivors at bars and bowling alleys…

I think for its time it worked well and was innovative. As you've said, the trackball is superior in every way but, there is a charm to the Crowns controls. I've played Golden Tee and Midway's Skins Game, which uses another similar design to that of Crowns, and of them all, I would say Crowns is the least fun to play.
