Hi There!

Anyone know where I can find an Alca bootleg board (working or not) of Crazy Kong? Growing up in Europe this was the most common version of Donkey Kong and, despite some of the weird colors, played rather nicely.

Thing is, despite it being rather prevalent in Europe and, from what I've heard, Australia, I haven't come across any of them on eBay, Craigslist or anywhere else. Are they super rare or did they just disappear, courtesy of some sort of Nintendo crackdown?

They're around, if you look hard enough :) If you see a Falcon style single boardset, and it only has 13 EPROM's, it's probably the Alca bootleg version. If it has 14, it's probably CK Part 2 (which I believe was the official one licensed overseas). If it's not a Falcon style boardset, then it's probably running the Alca bootleg version. I've got 5 boards that have the Alca bootleg style ROMs. One is an actual Falcon board (but is missing 1 ladder on the barrel board, but otherwise, the rest of the game is the same). Another is a Falcon style board (that one is loaned out to a fellow KLOVer), one is an Orca 2-board set. The other 2 are similar boards, 2-board sets with Falcon pinout, one is Donkey King (but otherwise identical to the Alca bootleg in gameplay), the other has different colors (I think it has a CK Part 2 color PROM on the board) and no audio amp on the board. A couple of them came from ebay (the one I loaned out and the one with different colors).

Good stuff :) Most of the boards on eBay seem to be 'proper' DK boards and usually go for an arm and a leg. I'll revisit my current Falcon board and see what gives..

Here's a pic of my Falcon board, with a yellow circle showing the missing EPROM (the Falcon style boards will have 14 sockets, but only 13 populated for the Alca bootleg style ROMset). All my other boards running that version only have 13 EPROM sockets.

Even more rare is Krazy Kong (check it out in MAME)
I have a KRAZY Kong board set. It's unbelievable how this board was put together. Wires and such hacked in here and there. I purchased this several years ago on eBay as working but never plugged it in as my "multi kong using a cowgill JAMMA setup" never materialized. If you're interested PM me an offer. Being sold AS IS.

Yzoer I have never seen you posting here before nice too see another person from Snohomish here!

Those crazy Kong boards are hard too find and when you they might be dead.

I guess I've been lucky :) Of the 8 boards I have/had, all of them worked. That Falcon one I posted (my 2nd reply) is sensitive to voltage...on a PC switcher, it has all sorts of graphical glitches, but runs ok in my Gaplus cab using a JAMMA adapter. It does have sound issues though (missing the samples and has a bad AY-3-8910 sound chip). One other board I bought also had a bad AY-3-8910. Swapped it out with a good one and it worked perfect after that (and was donated to Funspot to fix their machine, which had a dead board) The rest all work 100%. I even bought a couple untested and they worked.

Thanks for all the replies guys and apologies for the slow reply as I travel a lot for work..

Anywho, so the 'natural' follow-up question is whether or not a Falcon board is identical from a hardware point of view and will take Alca eproms. Unlike main-stream Nintendo boards, it's hard to find a legible schematic for bootleg boards. I guess I could check out the Mame source...

Simpsons99 - Moved to the area from the Bay area a couple of years ago and have been relatively quiet on Klov. I've primarily been collecting / fixing boards as the slippery slope of collecting full-size cabs is dangerous.. very dangerous :) That said, I've got a universal Mr. Do cab but I'm considering (shameless plug) selling that and building a new cab..

How many people here are from the greater Seattle area btw?

There are a ton of Seattle area collectors here, and we have our own private message board as well. If you are interested in becoming a member of the private group send me a PM and I will help you out.
