My taito cc had non-original joysticks on it when I got it. I followed cnlmoore's blog on using the sanwa joysticks as "close" to original replacements. However, I'm guessing that the joysticks weren't originally so short. Can anyone with original joysticks measure the distance from the cp to the bottom of the joystick ball? And while you're at it, I'd be curious to know what the diameter of the original joystick's ball is.

CC Joy

The shaft is only 7/16" from the top edge of the cp to the bottom edge of the ball. The ball diameter is 1 3/8". I did my best at wording this as to nit be an easy target for a quote hack. :)

Thanks! Yes, that concern crossed my mind when I posted as well. Aw, heck. I'll just say it. Your balls are bigger than my balls.

Well, using the sanwa's as described in that blog post, they end up at about 5/16" above the cp. So as I suspected, they are a little bit too short, although not by much. But I think it's better to be too tall than too short, at least in terms of avoiding wear on the screened cp.

if you use the other sanwa adapter plate, they would fit taller and then you can shim it down.

Interesting. I'll have to look at the joystick to see where that goes, but it sounds like a good approach possibly since I might order the bigger balls anyway. Although I could also just remove those little wooden shim boards that are on the cc cp.

you toss the flat plate the sanwa used and use that one instead. I think they sell it as an option with the sanwa. Pretty sure its for nintendo style mount. If you went with a larger diameter ball, then I think it would be close to prefect.

The only problem is the mounting holes, but I think you could drill some to fit the CC pattern. If not, I can't imagine it would be that hard to make a mounting plate for CC. I am sure there are 30 or so people who would be intersted. The sanwa joystick has about the right feel as the originals..

Yeah, the mounting holes was what was throwing me off. It might be more trouble than it's worth when I can just remove those shims built into the cc cp with little effort. Since I don't have original joysticks, leaving the panel as stock as possible in case I want to go back is not something I have to worry about. It is a good suggestion though.

I removed the built in shims from the underside of the cp and remounted the joysticks last night. MUCH better. 1/2" from cp to the bottom of the ball, so pretty close to what the originals are said to be.

I also ordered the larger balls this morning from lizard lick (35mm).

How do you guys like the feel of the controls on the taito ur? I picked one up recently and the sticks kind of feel like my sanwas do when playing cc on a candy cab. They are a little loose feeling for my taste resulting in occasional unintended diagonal movements at times. I much prefer the tightness of my cc cocktail sticks.. May try transplanting P2 joysticks to the ur to see if it makes a difference.

I don't have any form of original joysticks to compare to, but word is the sanwas are pretty close to the originals in terms of the feel, so that's what I did. Mine had a pair of really weird, cheap feeling joysticks on it.

With the sanwas adjusted for height, how is the accuracy? Does your climber ever make the unintended diagonal reach to either side when just trying to climb vertically?

It is just how that game is. After a while you get the "feel" and it does not happen any more.

That's wierd..the joysticks on my nichibitsu cc cocktail definitely have a different feel. Like they were specifically made just for crazyclimber. It's like they favor going up/down/left/right but you have to be real deliberate to make your climber reach diagonally. I'd imagine this might true also of a nichi upright version, but have never tried one. I'll have to try to get the hang of The taito controls when I bring the taito cc home from my friends storage unit...then it'll be a tough choice which one to keep. Mebbe both ;)

The JLF Sanwa sticks are pretty loose feeling and you have to do the mods to get them to mount up to the CP. I made a new CP. The JLW sticks are stiffer, feel much more like the originals and are a drop in replacement (still need to desolder wiring & add connectors of course). I have JLF's in my Taito CC U/R & JLW's in my CC mini...they're different, but I like them both.

The U/R Taito orange/white is what I used to play at Fred Meyer's when I was a kid while my parents went shopping. The cabaret is just plain cool. It's my 2nd favorite game so why not? DK is my fav and I've had four of those at one time. I'm down to three now. ;)
