Posting for those that like these types of setups, this is definitely one of the stranger ones.

Picked up this Crazy Climber bootleg yesterday. No markings anywhere on cabinet other than "002" on the rear door. Previous owner purchased it from an arcade closing down in the mid 80s, hasn't been opened since. All parts appear original, even the marquee lamp is fully Japanese.

- Haven't ID'd monitor yet, security0001 suggests its a 20EZ
- Cabinet serial is 002
- Board appears bootleg? No markings other than "G-NB"
- Bezel/Control are a single piece of plexiglass, with an additional smoked piece of plexi underneath
- Heavy duty upper marquee bracket (similar to Japanese Namco)
- Coin door is unique, can't ID it with any other cab. Opens from left.

Monitor Chassis

Game coins up and plays, needs a monitor rebuild. Controls work great.

Here's the start of removing ~30 years of smoke from the sides..nasty.

love these, I'm with the crowd we need to keep some conversions and bootlegs around.

That would explain the "002," but it looks like a knockoff to me. No Nichibutsu markings even on the PCB.

I'm just saying...clearly you can see this cabinet has always been a crazy climber. It came out at a time where kits weren't a thing yet....originally released in Japan in 1980...distributed by Taito in 82. The coin door and everything else screams Japanese....it's possible it could be a prototype before they found the black cab design on the flier

Definitely a theory, trying to find more info on it.

This is so cool, and yeah, this definitely is an extremely Japanese cabinet. The bezel art (especially for the climber character) is very in-style with old Japanese gag manga comics at the time, and the engrishy instruction card (as common as engrishy instructions are elsewhere) really kinda tops it off.

Yes, I was going to comment on the art detail as well....seems the refined artwork was better...but this artwork is more detailed than a normal bootleg to me...I'm guessing that if it is a prototype, you had to make it at least halfway presentable to the ceo's at the company.

From the loosely-translated instruction card:

CRAZY CLIMBER

  • By the window OJAMMA-MAN Flower Pot and Iron Frame etc. do obstruct the Climber
  • You can get Bonus Points if the Climber catch Adbaloon and jump up to upper window
  • The King-Kongs and Condols will assault the Climber. The Climber must then dodge their assaults and go ahead
  • You may successfully use the Swinging Gondola
  • The helicopter is waiting the Climber on the roof. Get in the Helicopter
Then Let s challenge another new building

Love that cabinet. I agree that's some awesome art.

And in the spirit of translation, "A winner is you!" for grabbing that cab. ;)

go- go- go!

Who knows?
I like the flames in the artwork and the mention of the gondola although they don't exist in the program code.

or on this version, do they......?

It would be nice to dump the ROMS, but I suspect they're the same as the ccboot version.

I'm terrible at Crazy Climber, but it seems this one is a lot easier than the Taito one I've played at 2084, so it'll be awhile until I can get to that level. However, the controls work great - that could be part of the reason.

There's a few sounds in there I don't recognize, I'll see if I can upload a video once i can get the chassis rebuilt.

It's a Japanese Tehkan/Namco cabinet.

The cabinet matches the Namco cab, from the 1-piece bezel/control panel to the heavy duty marquee bracket.

Still doesn't explain the "002" number on the back or the different style coin door.
