Just repaired yet another Millipede pcb. Would randomly give the same bad ram code and I noticed that ram was previously socketed. Turns out the socket they used was bad. I can't belive there can be sockets this cheap! Top one in the pic was used at some point to repair this pcb and the bottom is the new socket. Just terrible in the differences.

Yeah, original sockets aren't really that bad. I rarely replace them.

The time you definitely want to be suspicious is if they've already been replaced!
 
That looks like a Radio Shack socket to me.

Some of their sockets were very cheap. The kind that would work for a project and then not work later.

Some were quite good, but I found some in my stock that looked just like that.

I pitched those.
