Hello all. I've got a progear conversion with some graphics problems and was really hoping for a hint or two on where the problem might be. So far, i've tried reburning the program roms and the graphics roms with no luck. I've tried cleaning all the contacts, still no luck, tried taking the boards out and squeezing them together, still no luck, tried touching up the solder on all the rom sockets, no luck... In the test menu, all the ram and program checks out ok. Pictures attached.. The second one is what happened when I tried to run razoola's suicide checker.. Complete nonsense on the screen.. Anyway, if anyone's got an idea where to look, that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What do the self tests show when you first turn it on?

You may have some bad 6264 SRAMs on the cart board.

so unfortunately I don't have another asian a board to check with but I do have a different b board (marvel superheroes) and the a board works fine with that one... Also, gonna look like a complete plank here, but what exactly are the self checks at the start?

oh, an thanks a lot for the replies.

Most likely, something you can't see because the monitor is warming up. ;)

You'll need to let the monitor warm up then reset it and watch the screen. It'll do a few tests... they fly by fast though.

You need to post a board pic.

Your "A" board is fine. Your "B" board is not.

Imho, the conversion pricess falied. You need to review it and check for faults.

Ok, so... the only thing I can see which comes close to a self check, is the screen where it identifies the region... Other than that, it's just the capcom logo and phoenix logo... (pic at bottom of post). Also, have added pictures of the board but try as I might, I can't find anything obviously wrong. Checked the jumpers over and over but can't find a thing. Pics also included..

Here are a couple of questions :

Did you perform the conversion yourself?

If you didn't, did the "B" board work for a while and then stop?

If you did, were you able to verify that the game that was on there before the conversion was working properly?

If you converted a "B" board that had a dead battery on it before the conversion process then the acid could have affected the two square QFP chips that are closest to it. If the traces or pins on/to those chips are corroded or broken you will see graphics corruption just like that.

Brian.

Hi there, so, yes I did the conversion myself and to the best of my knowledge, the game was working before, till it wasn't (suicided) There is no acid damage that I can see, or broken traces, but i'll have another, closer look, when I get back from work. Thanks.

If I follow you correctly then you are saying you obtained this board after it had suicided?

You should have just performed the suicide fix for the game that was on there first to ensure your "B" board was working before attempting to convert it. The first step I always do before repairing a suicided board is to stick Raz's "suicide tester" ROM on the board to be sure it is working properly.

If you did that first and it all checked out OK at that time, then the problem is your 27C322's that you burned. If you didn't, then there is most likely some damage on the QFP chip that is closest to the battery position (you don't have to be able to see oxidation for it to cause damage).

Or the 6264 SRAMs are bad. They will cause graphic problems.

I once knew a girl named Bridgett ...

... who was a complete iget ... :D

Loot at the security chip on your board and see if it is PALG or PALF. ;)

Ok, think i've found the problem. One of the 2 custom chips near the battery does actually have a bit of corrosion on 3 of the pins. Question is though, how do I fix it? I would post a picture, but for some reason, i'm not able to at the moment. Keep getting error messages from the manage attachments box...

Pic may be too big...

You'll need to check continuity on the traces to where the pin goes up into the chip body to see if it's not making contact.

This is where the probe set from Radio Shack comes in handy as it has needle tips that can pierce the conformal coating over the traces to help with checking continuity.

The Three Custom Capcom chips by the battery are all Custom Logic chips. Clean off the corosion--Ohms test the traces with your Multi-Meter--And hope the Customs are not bad, becuase the only place you will get one is off another "B" board. Then, when you're done, double check your security chip type and your jumper settings. These must be set up correct in onrder for the board to work right.
