I am sure this question has been asked several times already, but I am sick of searching^^. I just bought a CPS2 setup. I was very happy about it until I tried to turn it on. I get no sound and a bunch of trash on the screen. I looked at the game board and took voltage readings from the battery, checked 3.67V. Does this sound like a game board problem or a motherboard problem? Also I made sure the connections between the boards were very tight. I know about Raz's suicide test program but I lack access to an eprom burner.

Did you check your voltage from your PSU? If you had another A board or B board lying around you could probably confirm one or the other may be bad. Anybody local have another CPS2 setup?

I did check the voltages and they are fine. The only person I know in the area with another CPS2 setup is the owner/operator of a pool hall but they want to charge me $200 to test my setup. I don't have $200 to my name right now.

$200 to test a board... that's insulting.

it would be easier to send it to someone on our boards here.

If you get trash on the screen then I would suggest that you clean the edge connetor, if that doesn't work then I suggest you seperate the boards and check the pins to see if any are bent. If there aren't any bent pins then there is something wrong with your board and you should send it out to be fixed or buy a replacement.

When the batteries die the screen will usually be a single solid color.

Somehow I feel like I am about to incriminate myself when I say this. I have my +5V running at 5.2V. I understood that that voltage would be acceptable after reading some post on a different forum.

Have you checked the wiring harness connnection to the boards and tried cleaning the connection?

As I recall when I had a board suicide, the screen was blank - no garbage on screen.

Garbage on screen and nothing else is either poor connection/bent pins on the pcbs or a corrupted program rom causing the game to crash. Assuming of course the voltages and motherboard are ok. Where are you located?

depends on where you measured it at

have a malfunctioning PCB where there is so much resistance on the board/wires/pins/connector, i have to turn the switcher up to + 7V, just to get 5.1 on the PCB !

when the switcher was set at +5.1, i'd measure 3.2 on the game board !
if you had tested the circuit anywhere through to the connector, you would have seen +5.1 volts, thinking everything is ok
:)

all im saying is, you want to eliminate the connector as a potential problem
what i do is measure both sides of the connector. if there is a problem with the connector, you could plug in another game and have the same trouble...

how does the contacts look on the game board ? nice and clean ?
oxidized ? galvanized ? dirty ? burnt ?

The connector looked good but I cleaned it anyway. I also verified no bent/broken pins with no change.

As far as the connector socket (harness) goes, it is the same one I use on my Naomi to power the I/O unit. It works fine for that application. I don't have anymore CPS2 stuff to try.

I opened the case and took my voltage readings on both side of the edge connector to verify my readings and they checked as:

11.98V

5.13V

I always try to get my +5 as close to 5.1 as I can when I run my Naomi, which I had been since my last reading.

Here is an image of what comes up on the screen, just for kicks.

Do you get any sounds or movement from the garbage during attract mode or does it freeze at that screen?

Mitsurugi-w, I would really appreciate that. I sent you a PM.

Mitsurugi-w, I sent that board your way. Let me know what you find out.
