I have a few CPS2 boards a was planning on changing the "suicide" batteries on all of them. Before I did I checked the voltages and surprisingly they were at 3.7v. I noticed that they had what I assume are the manufactured dates for the battery printed on them. All were 93-06 or 93-08. Is this the year and month?

My real question is if the battery is reading 3.7v do they need to be changed? They are almost 7 years old but are still reading good. Do these batteries suddenly drop in voltage or is it gradual.

I suppose the safe bet is to go ahead and change them. I just want some more insight to exactly how these batteries commit suicide.

All feedback is appreciated.

General rule of thumb is to change them once every five years, so I say do it ASAP. Of course if they die then the cart dies and your only option is to buy the relevant Phoenix binaries from Raz.

Here's a CPS2 battery replacement guide:

As it says, don't leave the board without a battery for more than 20 minutes (although I've known them last for an hour) - that should be plenty of time to replace the battery (which should take only a matter of seconds if you're good with your iron).

Thanks for the info!

I do CPS2 phoenix work in the USA for $25 plus parts and code costs from Razoola. There are usually no parts needed unless one or more EPROMs don't want to erase.

I believe it also mentions relative to the read voltage that the types of batteries being used are of a chemical composition that they'll read the right voltage almost up until they die, there isn't a gradual drop off like there is with your standard aa/c/d cell batteries. Them reading 3.7 now is no indication that they won't die next week.

Thanks! This is what I was looking for!

Jammaboards.com has them for $6.95 for 1 or 2 and the price is a little cheaper the more you buy.

I just got off the phone with the local batteries plus and they stock them for 6.45 each. I guess I know where I'll be headed after work today -- I got 3 boards that I need to go ahead and do ASAP.
