CPO's and Fag Burns. Hideous Scars or Badges of Honor??

On a few of my restorations, including my current MP resto, in lieu of getting a nice new repro, I have left the old CPO intact, so long as the condition was decent, and the wear was minimal. Everytime I have done this though, there have been ciggy burns on the original overlays in various spots. Does anyone besides me actually like them and feel they are part of the game's history?

I usually leave them, unless they are really hideous or the rest of the CPO is in need of replacement.

Unless they are really ugly I leave them alone. On my Turbo-Mini there are cig burns on the plastic bezel over the monitor. Actually, not so much burns but rather where the cig melted the plastic and left an imprint. Not really anything to do about them unless a nicer condition plastic bezel could be found. They don't bother me so they stay. And I suspect other TM would have the same problem. That is a great place for a cig if one is playing and smoking (I don't smoke).

I think some of the pristine restorations that have been done here are nothing short of works of art. Brilliantly done, and the results are breathtaking...
That being said, I have never once seen a pristine condition game in any arcade I've ever been to. Maybe others have, maybe other ops took better care of the games than the ones that were on location by me, who knows...
It just wouldn't feel right for me to be in a game room with brand spanking new looking games...
So, I would say Badge of Honor.

I hear you. I have done restorations both ways, and truth be told, I always feel more comfortable playing the machines with the decent used cpo's on them than the ones I stuck new overlays on. I am always worried about the repros peeling, tearing, bubbling, coming unstuck, leaving my sweaty palm prints on them, etc. With the factory overlays, I know they will last many more years of my minor home abuse.

Is it just me, or do Donkey Kong control panels get more cigarette burns than other machines? Seems like people BIID really wanted to melt the plastic.

I don't like to buy used cars. Even if I saw one that I like, I wouldn't buy it if it was rusty or dented. And if it was, I'd get that baby fixed right away. I'm not any different about my games...especially since they're in my house. Now, I suppose if they're in your garage with your rusty or dented car...;)

I don't know about DK but I have seen pics of a few Rock-Ola Warp Warp games that had consistent cig burns - in the same place. The CPs looked almost identical. I thought I was looking at a pic of my Warp Warp they were so consistent.

Guess that makes sense regarding how a player would hold a cig while playing.

Badge of honor, as long as the stuff is minor. Of course, your idea of a fag burn is most not likely tied to the European definition, so I'd have to say no fag burns for me...

I don't smoke and I would think that cigarette burns on my cpo would send the wrong message to friends that I do indeed smoke and it would be ok to then smoke and park the cig on my cpo whilst playing...so I don't want to have that discussion.

DKs are by far the worst and I have threatened to pull my machine from my bar the next time I catch someone smoking while playing it. As far as replacing the CPO, I usually leave it unless is it in really bad shape or part of it is cracked and missing. I think it's kind of neat when my nieces and nephews can't believe that there was actually smoking allowed in the old arcades.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I won't put any cab in my house that doesn't look brand spanking new. Although I do think all the dings and cig burns ARE part of the history of the cab and kind of like a badge of honor - it doesn't mean I want to look at it though!

if its all cracked and missing chunks or the paint's wore off its gotta go. If it looks good and is complete with cig spots and burns, its just character.
My 720's that way - complete with cig burns around one or 2 of the buttons, but it really doesn't bother me. I won't be setting my lit smokes on it, but its just character to me.
Same with my PPs. They both have the cig burns on the bezel, but they're on the back side and you can't see them at all unless you know where to look for them, and finding one without them is near impossible. So, they're just character, too.

My SHO has a nasty burn in the plastic bezel.

What i think of is, wow what was that person inhaling, Tobacco and other stuff that's in a cigarette and on top of that melted plastic and fumes of melted plastic.
Can't be that good for ya.
