Countdown to Turkey Day '18

Track and Field

The Hypersports PCB is now clean but doesn't like the switcher. I don't think the 5V is strong enough.

I also got the coin door painted and cut out the cardboard bezel. I still need to score the lines for the folds but it looks good. I would have gladly spent the $30 for a pre-cut bezel but they were out-of-stock.

I wish I could go back in time and punch the guy in the face who drilled multiple holes into the coin door. I was able to finish the lower coin door today. The holes in the upper coin door are filled but the first coat of primer shows some areas that still need sanded.

Looking forward to watching Pacland, I haven't seen one since I was a kid

I've been jamming to 80's music while working to get into the mood...maybe I'll create a video montage of me restoring one of the last cabinets. I'm getting a little concerned February is almost over and it doesn't help Columbus got some unseasonably warm weather for this time of year, it is 70 today!

I just need to stay focused.

bro, some 80s montage-type music to keep you motivated ... keep up the good work!!

I got this control panel from Arcade Shop but I'm not thrilled. The pressed studs are a problem since some don't sit flat. However, the worst part is the area where the stud is pressed has created a raised dimple in the metal itself....so its not like you can bondo over the stud to make a smooth surface since the metal itself is raised. You would need to grind the surface of the control panel to get it smooth. Ugh!

I also patched all the holes in the coin door and finally got it primed. It is ready for paint once I get the time.

Punchout!

March 11th

I still need to paint the black border on the plexiglass bezel and find a back door sheet but otherwise, I am done! More pictures to follow when I get the time but the inside of the cabinet is spotless. Everything has been refurbished from head-to-toe. I've come to learn that I'm horrible at Punchout....I still can't beat Kid Quick.

Coin door is done...well, almost. I miss placed the hinge and someone hacked the molex to death. The smudges are finger prints....I should have wiped down the door before taking the picture.

Track & Field

Wiring inside the cabinet is finally done and I added a dedicated Konami switcher. Next step is clean-up the Hypersports PCB which is beyond dirty.

And sideart! The restoration project is starting to round into form.

This is sexy. I need a new bezel (original in the game I just got is super warped) as well as new leaf buttons, and tips on the t-molding resizing.

Looks really good from here -- pm sent

Wow, I can't believe it has been nearly 5 years since my last update. I have to get moving. Basically, I have decided to jump start my restoration and repair efforts again here in 2023. I have been digging through my pile of spare parts and taking inventory of what needs done the last two weeks. It is not pretty but I'm off and running again. Wish me luck.

Punchout - Fired it up after 5 years and it works with no issues. Kid Quick is still unbeatable.
Ms Pacman - Strange issue with the PCB (or power to the PCB), I need to take a closer look.
Burgertime - This cabinet is disassembled and insanely dirty. A quick check and the game is 100% dead other than a faint flicker of the monitor. Not what I was expecting. Very disappointing.
Centipede - This cocktail is literally a pile of parts with one control panel restored with new artwork and a trackball.

I know there are other games listed in this thread to restore but I want to focus on getting these games playable before getting distracted again.

By Sunday night, I want to have Ms Pacman and Burgertime both running. If I'm lucky, I will also touch-up the paint around the bezel on Burgertime which has flaked off.

My very sad game restoration tracker started in 2018 that is being updated in real time......
  • Punchout! - Completed Mar'18
  • Track and Field - No progress since 2018
  • MutliWilliams - No progress since 2018
  • Pacland - No progress since 2018
  • Ms Pacman - Completed Feb '23
  • Rootbeer Tapper - No progress since 2018 (Order placed Feb '23 for Bezel and CPO)
  • Centipede (Cocktail) - Feb '23 Update
  • Sega Turbo (Mini) - No progress since 2018
  • Donkey Kong (Scratch Build) - No progress since 2018
  • Bag Toss (Empty - Convert to Horizontal Multicade) - Feb '23 Update
  • Burgertime - Completed Feb '23
  • Scratch Build (Black melamine, exact copy of Ms Pacman) - No progress since 2018
  • Scratch Build (Wood, exact copy of Burgertime) - No progress since 2018
  • Pacman (empty shell) - No progress since 2018
  • Turbo Upright - No progress since 2018
  • Donkey Kong (empty shell) - Sold
Burgertime - Completed!
This game is not only a favorite of mine but what I deem a "survivor". After cleaning up the cabinet and control panel overlay, I made the decision to go forward with a minor cosmetic restoration and leave the bezel, marquee and control panel overlay as original after a deep cleaning.
  • Replaced a blown fuse in the power brick
  • Replaced the starter on the marquee light
  • Replaced the linear power supply (hope to rebuild one day) with a switching power supply
  • Sanded, primed and painted the area surrounding the bezel
  • Installed a coin door, replaced the lights and lock
I want to replace the t-molding and fix the coin door alignment (or bend) that is causing a minor light leak in the future but those are not really high on my priority list. The game plays great. I might add a high score save kit to my near term list of to do's.

Centipede (Cocktail) - Progress (Game is now playable)
  • Installed a NOS monitor and rebuilt internal wooden support for monitor brackets
  • Scratch built (cut) and installed a new cardboard bezel
  • Installed new tinted plexiglass bezel
  • Player 2 CPO installed along with new trackball
  • End caps on metal legs and supports installed
  • Polished metal coin door
  • Disassembled, sanded, hammered out dents and primed coin bucket (this looked like a T-Rex used it as a chew toy)
  • Repaired cabinet damage from attempted force entry into coin bucket
  • Installed locks and latch for the table top
  • Replaced end on power cord
I am happy with this progress and the game is 100% playable leaving only cosmetic items to finish which include the glass clips (sand and paint), test fit glass top from 10 years ago, install graphics (underlay) and finish painting the coin bucket.

Bag Toss (Empty - Convert to Horizontal Multicade)
I landed on a Simpsons theme but didn't want to leverage the original Simpsons arcade artwork since it really does not fit the cabinet. I did find some images that should make for a decent CPO and what I think is nice side art.
  • Cut and primed a new wooden control panel
  • Ordered buttons and leaf switches
  • Removed side art and miscellaneous vendor stickers from cabinet
  • Removed coin door shell and sourced new coin door from existing parts
  • Finished build of a test rig for monitors and PCB's (I need to test my existing 25 inch monitors before installing in the cabinet)
Ms Pacman - Completed!
  • Replaced the marquee light and starter
  • Cleaned the PCB edge connector with eraser
This game is now complete and 100% working. It would be nice to install a high score save kit one day in the future.

Pacland - Bondo, sanded and primed the cabinet for painting

This thread is a reminder of how busy life can get and how fast time passes. I rebuilt my old paint booth and hope to spray black on 9/30 and finish off the painting on 10/7 with the yellow sides. I just need to track down the coin door, speaker grill and marquee brackets in my pile of parts....which is easier said than done.

Wish me luck!

I made decent progress on my Pacland. Despite planning to paint in October, I finally got around to painting the cabinet in early December so I could put some work into the game heading into the new year. At this point, I am nearly 9 years into this restoration. Here is what I was able to knock out the last few days:
  • Cut new marquee brackets and installed the original marquee
  • Replaced the starter on the marquee light - let there be light!
  • Installed a new speaker, sanded and painted the original speaker grill and bolts
  • Installed new baby blue t-molding
  • Painted and installed the carriage bolts that hold the coin bucket basket
  • Cut and installed a new kickplate with a touch of black paint to hide the head of the brad nails
  • Installed new leg levelers
  • Installed new side art! For some reason, I find this incredibly stressful
  • Installed a NOS monitor and tinted plexiglass surround
  • Located the bezel retainer with help from @AlexZander - Thanks again!
  • Cleaned and painted the control panel hardware
  • Installed the bottom control panel with the original CPO
  • Polished the iconic triangle buttons
  • Buried treasure - Found and installed a repro coin door from Takeman in my pile of parts
  • Disassembled the power block and cleaned everything while testing the power supply voltage
  • Installed the rear cabinet handles and stapled the mesh wire on the back door
  • Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned the inside of the cabinet some more
Now for the moment of truth, I plugged in the game for the first time.......and it works!!! I saved the the top control panel for the end so I didn't take any short cuts.

Here is what I have left to do with pictures coming once I get the CPO installed.
  • Install the CPO on the top control panel
  • Clean and install the control panel wiring and leaf switch holders
  • Order glass for the bezel and paint black
  • Clean and polish internals from donor coin door and transplant into the new Takeman coin door
  • Replace the existing power cord
  • DONE!
It has been 9 years but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel on what I consider a very underrated game.

I finally dragged Pacland across the finish line. The last step is to order some tempered glass for the bezel since there is no original artwork. I really like how the reproduction coin door looks. The coin reject mechanisms look fantastic after getting hit with some metal polish.

What is next? I'm thinking it is time to finish my Track and Field before moving on to my scratch build Burgertime or restoring the Root Beer Tapper that was converted into a Pacland (funny enough) and Wheel of Fortune.
