...looks as though it's about to begin.

And this was the happy word I received today on the Grapevine of Industry Insiders. TRON LEGACY, a film that many people loved, and a lot of people wanted more from, and that a very vocal minority incessantly bitch about... is getting close, incredibly close to having its SEQUEL announced!

As TRON LEGACY is set to cross $300 million worldwide, the film has proved, beyond a doubt that there is an audience that buys this science fiction fantasy. And as DAFT PUNK's blisteringly awesome TRON LEGACY score continues to power the geek work force of the nation to plow through mindnumbing task after task... Disney is beginning to realize, TRON could be a franchise.

As kids around the country pulled out wall crawling light trail leaving Tron LIGHT CYCLES from under their Christmas trees, Disney has been counting the receipts - and I'm told... it's about to hit the tipping point.

Now the real question is... Where does TRON go from here? There is a plan, but it is being closely guarded. There's a TV show in the works to keep the brand popping till the next Theatrical run, but it looks like us TRON geeks won't be having to sit around for 28 years hanging onto this last one, like we did the first one.

Disney is convinced there's money to be made. For better or worse, that means it's all but inevitable.

Saw the flick over the weekend... it was decent. Not great. Not bad. The 3D sucked and (again) gave me a headache... I will NEVER see another 3D movie (using current tech) again... it just isn't worth the extra $3.50 nor the headache I get EVERY TIME I see one...

$300 million can also be paid through toys and other merchandise not just through ticket sales. I'm looking forward to a sequel so nothing else I'll watch it. Go on Disney start production!

The studio only gets half the box office, so they've made less than $150 million of their $270+ million investment back (it cost $170m to make the film and $100m+ to market it). So the loss is $120 million based on theatrical receipts to date. To break even during the theatrical run this movie has to gross in excess of $540 million worldwide and it's not going to happen.

Yes, there will be money from DVDs, pay per view and cable but I am not sure this is going to be $100 million. I think at best this movie will break even years from now and Disney is not a break even operation. I am not sure I'd bank on a similar budgeted sequel especially based on reporting from Ain't It Cool News...

I saw it twice. It was good in IMAX but looked awful in Real 3D. So I contributed money to the cause....

It's done 160 million just in the U.S... There aren't up to date world ticket sales records yet, but as of opening week, the U.S. ticket sales were about 60% of worldwide, and then some places it opened a couple weeks later... so it probably has done 300 million or slightly more... just in ticket sales worldwide. Not counting toys, video game, or dvd sales.

That's a hit. I know people want this to be a flop, but the truth is Disney's making big bucks on this.

Not yet... but will. Studio's typically get 55% of the box office take. So $300 million is only $165 million world wide thus far... it hasn't even paid for itself. That said, toys, licenses, etc, etc, etc, will take it over the top for sure.

Another take on the Studios getting 50%...

"Most of the money from ticket sales goes back to the movie studio… During the film's opening week, the studio might take 70 to 80 percent of gross box office sales. By the fifth or sixth week, the percentage the studio takes will likely shrink to about 35 percent."

Of course for most films, by the time the 5th or 6th week rolls around, the majority of the money has already been made.

I haven't heard a thing about the Tron toys and video games making big money. However, Toy Story 3 and Cars each made over $2 billion in mechandise sales.

Saw the Movie last week. It was Awesome the 3D was Awesome!! A group of 6 people behind us started clapping at the end. The were in the late 20's and early 30's. Alot of people liked it, alot didnt. I would go see another.

I know I did my part.
I saw it twice in IMAX3D and brought my wife once. (She loved it)
I received as Christmas gifts this year:
Ultimate Sam Flynn
Remote control Light Cycle (drives on walls & ceilings-super cool)
Hallmark Light Cycle ornament.

Plus I also gave a remote cotrol LC as a gift to a fellow nerd. :)

Yes, there will be money from DVDs, pay per view and cable but I am not sure this is going to be $100 million.

The licensing will add up to a lot more than that so they can make a profit--several versions of DVD/BluRay will be available (bundled with the first movie, etc.), toys, clothing, soundtrack, posters, console games, pinball machine (coming in the spring), and a bunch of other stuff. I'm surprised they don't have a Tron cereal out.

Disney has been making money off of TRON for a LOOOOOONG time. There has been Tron merchandise for the past 20 years, they are doing just fine with this movie.
