I am looking for a way to cost effectively achieve a nice melamine wood laminate effect for cabinet sides. Melamine is perfect but its difficult to get here in black and quite expensive ($55/4x8 sheet). Just wondering if anyone has come across of a thin black or colored laminate that can be adhesively applied to particle board or plywood that gives a similar effect. I have used black counter top laminate but its a bit thick (not rollable) and adds up to be more expensive than melamine.

Thanks!

Vertical Grade

I believe what you're looking for is "Vertical Grade" laminate.

It's extremely thin, and made to go on -- you guessed it -- vertical surfaces, like arcade cabinets.

You can find it at some contractor warehouses, and black is always harder to find.

Good Luck!

Thanks, i'll drop the "vertical laminate" term at the countertop/flooring warehouse across the street and see what they have to say.

Thanks for the vinyl link. Any experience using it? I'll have to find some pics of the finished surface but that seems like a very cheap solution. Its just going to be on the sides of the cabinet at most which aren't seen so often when in a row. I can use the nicer stuff on the front.

I think I paid about $52 for a 4x8 sheet of matte black Formica laminate at Home Depot. Go to the guy there in that section and you can order anything. $52 sounds expensive, but you can cover a lot with sheet that large.
