Cosmic Chasm CPO Reproduction -- What's the Interest?

Now that I've finished the Quantum CPO project

(In case you missed it; http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=132849 )

I'm looking at the feasibility of a new project, the Cosmic Chasm CPO. I've worked on it on and off for over a year. It's a tough one because it's back lit and not screen printed like conventional CPOs are. I don't expect I'll ever make a dime off this one, it's a labor of love. I am interested in some feedback, though. Any interest in this at all?

Definately be a very short run one time deal. It'll be screen printed on 10 mil Lexan but probably not cut to save cost. I did make a short run of CP's themselves so I may have a few extras to sell.

Here's my latest digital proof next to an original and below it is the same proof lit up on the game. Keep in mind it's not color matched or printed with the right process but rather a proof of concept. Give me some feedback...

where did you get the art to print? I have a scan but it was so retouched in photoshop it lost all the detail of the original and just didn't look good anymore to me :(

I had to recreate the artwork from scratch. Scanning an original CPO doesn't give you a proper starting point. Actually does more harm than good. Colors can't be separated easily like most other CPOs.

I had it digitally printed at 3 different shops, each claiming they could duplicate the look of the original. It made sense since I only need one or two. They all look good but none were good enough. I met with an old timer in the screen print business. He looked at the original an explained how it was done back in the day. Bottom line is it needs to be screen printed. That creates a cost per piece problem that could be hard to swallow unless I could sell a few. So far I don't see any interest at all.

Depending on price ($60ish) i'd take 2.

I provided prOk a scan and he was working on it, but I haven't sent him any bits of the CPO I have for him to colour match.

First Quantum now Cosmic Chasm... Is Warrior cpo next?? :D

I will take one just to help the project along. I do not currently own a Cosmic Chasm.

kudos to you if you take this on. its a very difficult piece to recreate.

I'm kinda with darin on this one. I looked at this one really really hard to try and find a way to do it. Screening it was just out of the question as you'd never get the color separations to recreate that moire pattern the original had.. All you could do is blend the colors and make something kinda similar but definitely not the original look. Digital to me was just about the only way to go about this one and have a product that came close to the original. I'm really interested in the method you've used to separate the colors for screening, can you show some shots of the process? How'd you do it without a scan?

I'd rather not go into detail on my process just yet. It's taken some "out of the box" thinking. I've been tinkering with it for over a year. Let me follow it through on the CPOs and eventually the side art (ugh). Will be happy to discuss afterwards.

Seriously, man. Were these guys stoned when they spit this art out? Maybe more like "We're broke so just slam anything on the game and sell it!". Just look at this side art...

As some of you know, I've been tinkering with reproducing the Cosmic Chasm CPO. I just received what will probably be the final proof and I'm about ready to sign off on a short print run. The CPO is pretty darn close. I could spend another 100 hours tweaking it without very much return. Print run will probably be 20 pieces and not be cut. Cost is still fluid but I anticipate around $75.

I'm in for 2 cpo's for sure...looks great and your right on the art for this game..some of the worst fuzzy graphics you could imagine..but you have to at least go with what was original I guess..:D

**UPDATE**

The Cosmic Chasm CPO's are finished and ready to ship. Screen printed on 10 mil lexan. To hold down costs and remove any chance that my control CP was off a bit I did not have the CPOs trimmed or punched.

I also have a very small number of repro control panels that I'll offer for sale.

I'm currently talking to Alpha-tron about the side art. I plan to buy the incomplete NOS decals he has and have the missing pieces reproduced. Then I will be able to sell them as a complete set. It will be an easy job now that my graphics guy and printer have solved the CPO repro problems. I don't intend to mark up the NOS pieces but rather sell them at cost. I'll try to make just enough profit on the repro decals to break even. I sunk a lot of resources into the CPO's and will never recoup all of my costs. That's OK, it's not all about money. Please be patient while I work out all the details. I'd prefer a private PM if you have any concerns.

For now I'm holding off on selling the CPOs until the side art issue clears up. Here's a pic of the finished product...
