Converting Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to Wrestlemania

Hey gang,
So I read somewhere that you can convert an Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 board to a Wrestlemania board by simply swapping the Eproms. I have an eprom writer to do this however I was curious how this would work since the UMK3 and MK3 boards each had their own security chip. Is this an issue to use once I write the new Wresltmania Eproms or do I need to track down a Wrestlemania security chip. I never tried burning one of those and was wondering if it was any different than a normal eprom burn.

not all of my UMK3 roms have windows, just the game roms. so... you won't be able to erase and program all the roms to be WrestleMania, basically. unless you have some custom frankenstein UMK3 romset where all your roms have windows.

and yeah, you'll need the security chip too. I'm inclined to believe that if you run the wrong chip, the game will still run, but it will reset over and over after about a minute. (at least from what I recall hearing)

I'm not sure if ToplessZ has the security chip for that but he would definitely be the guy to ask.

Yeah, I hit up toplessZ and he said I would definitely need a security chip. Unfortunately he does not have one. As for the eproms without the windows, yeah I noticed that too however only some boards have the windowless chips on them. 1 board I have completely has the windowed eproms, the other two seem to have a mix of windowed and windowless. So yeah I still should be able to write the eproms however I do still need the security chip I guess. Anyone know where I can obtain one? Obviously I can buy a wrestlemania pcb but that would probably cost a lot more.

Your best bet is to sell your MK3 boards and buy a wrestlemania board. Why do I say this:

1. Wrestlemania sells for way cheaper than MK3 right now
2. IF you have masked roms, then you will need to buy windowed 27c801s to burn and install, these cost about 6 bucks each and there are like 24 of them on the board.
3. EVEN if you have all windowed eproms, 1 out of every 10 sometimes more; will have an issue with erasing and reprogramming. It nevers fails me. I go to convert a board like Hangtime to MK3 and I run into two or three eproms that either wont erase fully no matter what, or they appear to be blank but when you program them they fail. Sometimes there is just one or two bits that just wont clear, especially on eproms that the windows have been exposed for a long time(stickers missing). This cuases tons of trouble and you will then need to buy the 27c801s then pay shipping, yadda yadda yadda (which is why I keep a stock of them)
4. It takes FOREVER! to erase and reprogram 26 chips, just saying...

Oh and you would also have to buy the security chip from me for 25.00 plus shipping! LOL

Depends on the size of the eprom. Typically a 4-8 meg (27c4001 or 27c801) takes about 5 minutes. Make sure the window is completely clean. Those cheap erasers on ebay (the blue ones from Hong Kong) have 'sweet' spots. By this I mean the top left and very center of the pan erases the best. If you fill it up with 5 eproms and run it for 5 minutes only one will be fully blank(if your lucky, and that was when mine was brand new). My industrial eraser works much better but still takes at least 5 minutes. 2 minutes for a 27c512 and 6-10 for a 27c160.

Programming also takes about 5-6 minutes each for a 27c801 (fully program and verify)
Although programming times due vary depending onthe programmer. My willem takes ahwile to progam, but the startup is quick. My Data I/O 3900 is fast to program, but takes forever to get started and get each file loaded to program.
