This cabinet was initially part of a lot, but apparently is being sold separately now. Was poorly converted to an LCD Ms. Pac-Man. Perhaps the seller could be talked down? Just seems a pity to let a Thief stay like this…

Dammit, always too far away.

If anyone buys this and wants to deconvert it, I have refurbed boardsets available.

Also, there are MP3 versions of the audio for Thief, so one could resurrect it without the cassette player as well.

Yes! Thanks for the reminder. I have an archive of these files posted publicly here, for anyone to download. Details here:

I have this Theif in Chicago running double dragon… Will sell, complete and running or just empty original thief cabinet

So is there a detailed write up of which MP3 player to use and how to interface it into the thief wiring harness? I keep hearing people talk about using these, but there's never any mention of how they actually do it. The original cassette player in my shark attack went missing when the electronic repair company I brought it to went belly up.

If you're asking for a Bob Roberts-style wiring diagram, then no. However everything you need already exists. Detail has been provided in other threads as to what player to use, and how to use it. Here:

The wiring is simple enough, a diagram isn't needed. All you have to do is copy what was done for the tape deck.

The tape deck has two wires for power (12V in and ground), and four wires for audio output (stereo left, stereo right, and one ground for each). The mp3 player has the same input and output connections, because it's also a 12V player, with stereo out. If you have an original harness and tape deck in your cab, you already have all of the connectors and wiring. Just look at how the tape deck is wired in, and copy it for the mp3 player. If you're missing the player, all you need to do is build a harness to get power and audio between the IO board and the player, based on whatever wiring you have left in your cab.

Here's the diagram from the schematics. The connector on the IO board is just a 0.156 Molex, same as is used on many other games, APAR has them if yours is missing. Then you'll just need to add plugs to the other end to get 12V power into, and stereo audio out of, the mp3 player.

If you need photos showing the wiring interconnects, let me know.

I have a Thief PCB set and Pacific Novelty wiring harness running in a Dynamo cabinet (maybe someday a Pacific Novelty cab will pop up near me), and I used the Lepai MP3 player and the audio files @andrewb posted about above in place of the cassette player/tape.

Yeah, I've got a full unhacked Shark Attack harness. The refurbed cassette deck that I had plugged directly into it. I had two of them, the one I had at the repair shop got lost, and I used the refurbed one for my thief restoration, which I have long since sold. But I was able to hook the refurbed deck up to this SA harness to make sure it worked. I actually also have a shark attack cassette, but it was one that someone dubbed for me. Unfortunately, they unknowingly swapped the screaming channel with the the jaws theme channel, so while you're playing the game, there are continous uncontrollable and chaotic screams going on, but the minute the shark attacks somebody, it just goes to the more auditorily pleasing Jaws theme. So I'm gonna have to swap channels in the wiring harness if I ever do use the cassette again. Otherwise I'll just use the MP3 player and make it easy.
