I have read you can convert NBA Jam to NBA Jam TE by doing a ROM swap. Anyone know if this is the case? I have never done a ROM swap but heard you need to do the ROMS for the main PCB and soundboard.

Now, a few questions. Is this accurate? Can I take my Jam to, at the minimum, T.E. and/or Hangtime? Also, where would you even get the ROM set? Can they be burned, or do I just need to find a ROM set for sale?

NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE were T-unit games. you can swap all the roms out of an original Jam board to make it TE. likewise, you could take a TE board and make it original Jam.

Hangtime was a Wolf unit game however, completely different boardset, so the only upgrade/downgrade route you could go with that would be Hangtime and Maximum Hangtime.

You can have the roms done at hobbyroms.com but it would probably be cheaper if you just search around a bit for a TE board as you would have to do the main board set and the sound board set.

yeah, I'd hunt around for a non-working boardset if you want to get it cheapest. otherwise, just buying one outright won't necessarily set you back at all. I've seen them go for as low as $45 on here, and like maybe $100 the highest.

I see here that MK/MK2 also work on T-Unit, does that imply one could also rom swap from those boards to an NBA JAM board, or do some of them have slightly differing sound board connections etc?

I tried to convert my NBA JAM board to T.E. and it just showed garbled graphics. Made a thread about it her with no real outcome. Happy to hear if anyone figures it out!!

you did? when? I must have missed that one, i'd like to give it a read.

as stated already in this post, hangtime is a definite NO, and i agree your better off finding a TE board or buying yourself a chip programmer and burning the roms off a mame site.

I think there's a small GAL security chip that has to be changed as well as the sound/video/game roms, I could be wrong tho (i'm pretty sure with that swap the game should work. I'll have to take a look at a couple of my boards in the next few days to confirm.

How did you go having a look? Still keen to do mine :)

looks like the same part number at UE8 on the main board and u18 on the sound board so they should just be chip swaps. weird as i've seen them sold with a small Gal/Pal chip which i figured was UE8
