Hi all,

I have a working nba jam pcb and a non working Nba jam TE pcb (ue13 fails?). I want to convert my cab to TE so I tried to put the IC's from my TE pcb to my standard NBA Jam pcb. The game passed all startup tests but does some really funky things with the video, and does not allow me to play the game.

My question is: is it possible to convert the standard board to TE simply by changing the IC's to TE, or is there something I am missing?

Any help on this would be appreciated...

The only thing needed to change regular NBA Jam to TE is replacing the regular Jam's UG12 and UJ12 with the TE's UG12 and UJ12. You didn't need to change anything else. Try putting everything back the way is was except for the UG12 and UJ12 roms.

isn't that one of the ones where you have to swap out UF5? TE has a 3.0 chip while non has a 1.5 I could be wrong on this one but iirc that was the issue with these.

I just picked up an NBA JAM that was converted to a TE. Here are some pics of the board! Hope this helps. My board functions perfectly!

Chris,

Thanks for the info, I changed all of the chips that are listed in that kit and they all come up green on the rom check. However now the uf5 chip comes up red on rom check at boot. It was green at first but then restarted and came up red second time.

The game does load, but does some crazy things and the lower half of the screen is unusable garbage. top half appears to be ok.

Is UF5 easy to change? It looked like a soldered ic v. socketed ic like the others, but I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

Is it possible that by having the wrong uf5 chip installed with the TE boot roms that I could have damaged my board or the previously working uf5?

Thanks all, I thought this was going to be an easy change over, but I was wrong.

you need a PLCC chip puller to pull the chip out of the brown socket. radioshack sells them for like $11 but your better off finding them in a PC repair kit for a few bucks more (also sold at radioshack).

they can be tricky to remove at first but you'll get the hand. I highly doubt you damaged the board from the roms unless you physically damaged it while doing the swap process (or bent some solder side pins but i doubt it)

keep us updated

chip puller you'll need:

While you were replying I was inspecting my board downstairs. I have a chip puller and saw that it was indeed a socketed IC, so I switched the 2 chips put the game back together and voila a perfectly working nba jam TE.

Thanks all for the help. Wish I had asked sooner.

Just for completeness sake of this thread, I had tried switching only UG12 and UJ12 and it failed all of the boot roms at start up except UJ/UG 16 and 19. You must switch them all with the exception of UJ/UG 16 and 19.

Thanks for offering the help though.

awesome, mecha was the first to mention this to me ever. glad you got it running, and very much appreciate you trying just UG/UJ12

Attempting this conversion..
The kit looks like it came with a full set of roms but is that necessary? Or do I just need the two mentioned earlier in the thread?
It's already got v3.01 of the big square ic

You'll need all the chips, not just the 2 that zeno mentioned.

Here is the proper information...

When TE came out, the board didn't change, but they did change the code on the following roms...UG12, UJ12, UG16, UJ16, UG17, UJ17, UG18, UJ18, UG20, UJ20, UG22, UJ22, UG23, UJ23. They also changed out the main PLCC controller chip. Regular Jam uses a 5410-13520-00. TE uses a 5410-13530-00. So if you want to change your regular Jam out to TE, you'll need all the aforementioned, correct TE roms AND the correct TE PLCC chip. The only place I can tell you to get the chip from is a 'parts' board or something like that. There's no open source for them like there are for the roms. Just wanted to put this out there. Here are a couple pics of the PLCC chips for reference. You'll also have to change out the three sound roms if you want the correct sounds.

that PLCC chip is a scaler, it's what helps with the effect of the players being further away or closer up. also prominently featured in the falling into the pit animation on MK2. I don't particularly understand why it would have changed between Jam and Jam TE, given they're technically the same game, but I think Midway employed different scalers for copy protection. (the Judge Dredd prototype shared with NBA Jam I think)

sidenote: if the scaler has bad connection, it makes the text blocky. a friend had a Revolution X for sale, and that was blocky too. on a hunch I just pressed down on the Lattice chip on the board and it cleared up. so that's the X-unit scaler. :p
