Anyone have any experience converting other Tatio games to Zoo Keeper? Qix, Elevator Action, Jungle Hunt, etc. The only thing better than one Zoo Keeper game is....2, or 3, etc.

I'm going to attempt a Qix to ZK conversion soon. I have an almost working Qix so I have to figure out why that's not working first. I'm going to start by replacing the Taito power supply.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Qix to ZK conversion manual. The other titles have pretty similar cabinets (if not identical), though the conversion kit was specifically marketed for Qix machines.

Of course, the hardest part of this is finding a working ZK board set. I have a board set I got on ebay a while back but I don't know if it works.

Are you working on a conversion yourself?

The Qix hardware (which includes Zoo Keeper) runs on two 6809 CPUs whereas the Jungle Hunt hardware runs on two Z80s.

They're quite different sets.

Yeh, I was going to remind them of that too. It's an entirely different boardset. Jungle Hunt/King is very similar to Elevator Action, but a world away from Qix and Zoo Keeper. I wish Qix and Zoo Keeper would have been developed on EA/JH hardware, since IMHO it is far superior.

Hmm I'm thinking Im going to have to convert my Mr. do in a qix cabinet to a zookeeper:)

I'd be interested in getting a copy of that QIX to zookeeper conversion
guide as well.

Are their any special voltages a zookeeper needs that cant be supplied by a switcher?

I'd rather just gut my currrent cab and go all new if I am going to
make the effort to convert to a zookeeper.

I have one of these manuals (found it in the Qix converted Zoo Keeper I acquired this year) and would be happy to scan it. I'll probably have time next week to do this.

That would be great! Thank You. It will be helpful to see what is changed in the conversion.

I think my CP might even be zookeeper one. The buttons/joystick locations look like the zookeeper ones more then the qix ones.

I may be wrong but the factory conversion of qix to zookeeper most likely included the extra boards that zookeeper has. I'm thinking the best way to go is the work around that is documented online. Here it is below. BTW I'm not Tim.

How to convert a Qix boardset to play Zookeeper.

A Qix boardset is nearly identical to Zookeeper, with two main differences.
Firstly, Taito added a "coin processor" board to the set to prevent people from
converting their Qix boards to Zookeeper. The game either won't run without it or
will run, but do funny stuff like add free credits and cycle the test menu
selection continuously. I figured out what they did and patched one of the ROMs
to eliminate the need for the coin processor. You can download the patched ROM
from here.

Secondly, Zookeeper has more video ROM than a Qix board was designed to handle.
To accommodate the extra ROM, Taito added a "video ROM expansion" board. Since
you don't have one of these, you'll have to make a little daughterboard yourself
and make a few wire mods to the main ROM board. Here's a schematic detailing the
daughterboard and the mods.

You'll notice there's no socket U2 on the Qix ROM board. There's a 74138 at U2.
You'll have to remove that chip and add a socket where it used to be and plug
your new daughterboard into U1 and U2. You'll also notice little odd jumper packs
in sockets U22 and U29. You'll need to remove those and jumper the pins as shown
in the diagram.

Now that that's all done, all you need to do is burn a set of Zookeeper ROMs
(using my ROM19 from above). The ROMs that would normally go into U3-U10 of the
daughterboard should be plugged into U3-U10 of the Qix's ROM board.

I also have a couple jungle hunt to elevator action conversion manuals that I could scan if anyone wants. Or, I could sell one of them since I have 2. Also have jungle hunt and jungle king manuals.

Hey Tim-

I just wanted you to know that you are THE MAN.

Some of your ROM hacking writeups on your site are very interesting. I love the Crazy Climber stuff.

I'm sure Tim appreciates the compliment but, I'm not Tim. lol

I just copied and pasted his info from the net.
