Convert a STUN Runner controller to a SW controller

How hard would it be to do this?

Not sure how hard, but I know it can be done. There's an arcade in AZ (Castles 'N Coasters) that has Star Wars running in a STUN Runner cab.

No need to change anything it is the same except for the handles unless you really want to. I prefer stun runners handles.

I heard that the number of triggers is different and that the stun runner controller has one axis of rotation on the grips blocked by a piece of metal?

You are right. The metal plate can be removed by one hex screw, IIRC. The metal plate is inside the controller.
I forgot about the triggers. The thumb buttons aren't on the Stun Runner controller. Does that affect Star Wars?

You could buy the inside grips that include the thumb buttons from Happ if you want them or you could buy the both handles for a Star Wars controller. I forget if you will have to run the wire for the thumb buttons though.

What I'm wondering is if just removing that blocking plate is enough. I mean, does the internals of it include the potentiometer to track that axis of movement?
I could pull the plate out but if there is no 'guts' for that axis of movement then you could crank that yoke to and fore and nothing would happen.

Yes it is enough. I have one and that was what I did. Take a look at the manual an compare the parts diagram for the yoke. It is the exact same except for the plate and the handles.

does not effect star wars. But it will effect esb.

I *think* you would lose the upper 2 cannon on your Xwing if you didn't have the buttons. Or maybe you could just wire both left cannon to the left button and both right cannon to the right button and be done with it.

They even included the pots? That seems like a strange waste of dough...

Star Wars treats all 4 buttons like 1 button...

ESB uses the top buttons to launch the harness things at the AT-AT's legs, etc...

Does it? I could have sworn each trigger controlled an individual cannon. I know I've seen individual cannon firing and not constant volleys of all 4 at once. I haven't played for awhile so maybe I'm missing something. I think the Mame version only has one cannon control. I'm talking about SW not ESB btw.
