Okay so i'm trying to work out this deal for a playchoice 10 on good old craigslist. He says it is a dedicated cab but i've come to realize that any single monitor playchoice 10s especially in a blue cab means it was converted.

So to try to talk him down in price (asking $695) how can i tell what the game used to be by looking at the serial on the back?

It was converted from a Popeye. The nonconverted PC 10's are in an all black cabinet.

There are actually single monitor dedicated cabs. They are black as Greg mentioned. Ironically, most dual monitor PC-10's were actually Punchout conversions.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo converted some DK's and Popeyes to single monitor PC-10s at the factory too.

Not only are they black, but they have their own design (which looks similar to, but not identical to, a Nintendo classic cabinet) which was shared by R-Type and the gray dedicated VS. Unisystem machines. The easiest way to recognize them is by their lack of a speaker grill in the front of the control panel, and by their Punch-Out / Mario Bros. style coin doors (Asahi Seiko model ADD). There is a picture of one here.

Here's an official picture of one from a Nintendo flyer as well:

Wonder why this side art version isn't on any flyers?

Plus, there seems to be at least 4 different marquee styles:

That sideart probably came later. I've seen both versions of the sideart on production PlayChoice machines.

There seems to be two common versions of the marquee on production PlayChoice machines (big Nintendo, small PlayChoice, and vice versa; white lettering in both cases). I don't know if that big red Nintendo logo one from the flyer was ever on production machines or not. What does the 4th version look like?

I think the primary factor when pricing a Playchoice is the games that are included. Given that there is a full 10 games, although most of them are fairly common with the exception of Castlevania and maybe The Goonies and SMB2, I would say that price is not crazy high.

*NOTE - These are completely my guesstimates, and do not indicate actual value*
Double Dragon - $35
MTPO - $35
Gauntlet - $35
Contra - $35
SMB2 - $45
Fester's Quest - $35
Castlevania - $80
PinBot - $35
The Goonies - $45
1942 - $30

Total - $410 just in games

Granted, I think $695 is still a bit much, particularly for one of the ugly blue conversions.

Edit: I think if you can get him around $550-$600, that would be a fair deal.

Thank you. I was going to offer him 550 in the first place.

Easy to install. Finding a good gun and bracket is the hard part. If you are really interested I may have enough spare parts left to put together a working gun.
