Is this a convergence problem? It seems that black is smeared a bit and/or red and green are out of alignment. It's a WG4605.

Can someone recommend an approach to fixing it?

Thanks!

Your red does look off a little. Convergence instructions are in the K4600 manual on arcarc.xmission.com in the monitor secton. Not sure if the black is because of the red convergence being off, or an effect caused by old caps...

Yeah, red convergence definitely looks off a bit. Convergence is done with the rings on the neck of the tube. Before messing with them, mark a line down them with a sharpie or something so you can get them back where you started :D

Should only need a very slight tweak. Look in the monitor manual for the specifics.

Also, very nice close-up photos of the screen! I've never been able to get photos of a CRT to turn out that good.

My Canon SD300 camera has a close-up mode for flowers/etc. You can get an inch or so away. That's what did it ... the normal pics weren't turning out too well.

I think it's a cool way to get some interesting pics. Like this.

I'll try the convergence rings when I get a chance.

The red looks a little off over the yellow but my Gorf bleeds like that too over the blue with a dark shadow sort of thing... always thought it was just.. well.. Gorf..

Some progress tonight. I improved the convergence and the red is better aligned. See the pic for the improvement. Green seems a little off in these pics but I'm learning that these old monitors can only really go so far. I can improve one part of the screen and worsen another area. So, compromise seems to be the key. The green looks fine with my eye so I'm done with convergence.

Tester007 said he had smearing black but I attached a blue background pic to show that isn't always true. VR201 Black Level Control (hard to get to because it's inside between the two daughter boards) solved that!

Red is still a problem. I can't use either the Red Drive VR401 or Red Cut Off VR403 effectively. They both have to be almost entirely minimized so I don't get a red bleed. See the last two pics ... I turned up VR 403 less than half way and I get that smear. My gorf guy appears pink sometimes too because I've got red turned down so far.

Any thoughts on my red adjustment issue?

As a weird note, the reds seem to differ at each level. First level doesn't look bad, second level looks pink, etc. It almost seems like the game is programmed with different colors on the levels.

We'd need to see some white cross-hatch screen to really know what's going on.( Full screen picture, not close up).

The rings are ONLY for converging the center of the screen. The corners must be done with the little "convergence strips".

The red smearing could be related to a weak gun in the picture tube, or dirty/faulty pots on the neckboard. Check closely for cold solder joints there. If you have access to a tube tester, check out the emissions of the red gun. Might just need a rejuve.
