Has anyone ever used cleaners on their connectors for these old classics?

My brother got some R5 power booster and it seems to work great. We tested a board at a 5v post and got about 4.87. after using the cleaner we got 5.02.

it seems to work
the site is www.caig.com

r5 is no longer available but their deoxit is the same.

what's the opinion on cleaners and such?

You're already using the best one I've ever found. DeOxit is by far better than any other cleaner I know of. It won't do miracles, like make a burnt plug work like new, but will likely keep it from burning out in the first place.

My opinion is that cleaners only are a temporary solution.
The problem will come back, and worse than before.
You can't fix a 30 year old pot with contact cleaner. Replacing the pot is the best solution.

No one mentioned pots, but Caig makes a different cleaner that works great for them too. DeOxit FaderLube (used to be CaiLube) brought almost every potentiometer back to life that wasn't completely worn out back when I was working in electronics repair. Even 20 year old faders on EV mixing boards. After a couple of years of use they were still working like new.

Contact cleaners.

I use puretronics.
Combined with a hose hair brush you can get a very dirty board clean or prep a area very well for soldering. A good tool, when used with proper method and as part of a set of steps. or just to clean a area and get a good look.
Great if you follow through and clean the rest of the board properly, leaves no residue (other than the residue if you dont clean properly then it will loosen up and move whats stuck on a board) do it right you can make a 20+ year board look like new..
Have used it on many laptop motherboard repairs etc
