Has anyone used Quickrete concrete stain on their garage floor?
I am trying to figure out the most economical way to do my floor and I really don't want carpet. Looking for feedback and ideas. Thanks!

If your going to stain make sure you strip the floor first so the stain will take. Has to be porous or the stain will not set in.

I'm going with this: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=23

I'll be starting this weekend...

take pictures as you go if you can!

I've been thinking about doing this for a while as i plan to add a 12x16+ addition to my garage and the existing floor needs to be resurfaced and I'd love to put a coating/design/mat down but haven't decided yet. My floor is in ok condition but it's 50 years old and has some surface deterioration so i'm not sure how i'm going to attack it yet.

Good topic.

Will do. Here's a pic of dogbowl's floor that he posted in my flooring thread:

absolutely. The kit i'm looknig at has some pretty potent stuff to strip. I have a lot of oil on my garage floor so it may take me a while to get it perfect.

For prep, just go to Home depot or any HW store and buy TSP powder. Usually those kits come with weak Citric acid based powders. I used TSP mixed with bleach and wore sandals while applying it. No noxious fumes and it only burns a little. :)

After seeing that thread i might want to go with that wood flooring looking product that's moisture resistant that SportyMac used.

I've seen some lock together tiles that are shock resistant that you can buy and have different logo's printed on them too, i just can't make up my mind.

Love the pics guys and thanks oldtyme for the link great thread.

No problem man. Stay tuned this weekend, I hope to begin on my floor. I might sway you back to the stained concrete idea ;)

yea oldTyme, i think i am going to wait for your progress before I make a decision =P
are you going to put the little specs of gold in yours?
i wonder how hard it would be to emulate old 80's neon carpeting with those speckles in a dark stain. That may be the route i go.

In your climate, a stain should be fine. Here in the tundra where we use salt by the ton, that shit won't last more than two years. The only real way that lasts is to have the color mixed into the concrete when it's poured and even this method doesn't look good for more than 5 years.

No, I'm actually going to acid stain it- not epoxy it. It's supposed to look close to natural stone with the way the acid etching reacts with the concrete (kinda like dogbowl's above). I'm also going to put some clear neon paint on top before I seal it, so wifey won't notice until the blacklight is on! :D

Incase you have not done your job yet ,, [ i might be too late ]

On this link you have the technical information link ,

Follow all their steps for the prep , and application methods , drying times etc ,,,

If it was a job for me , i would just grind the surface , but you wont have a grinder i bet ,

This is a water based product ,, you dont get much integrity with water based ,

ie , they wear out alot quicker than solvent based ,so i recommend 3 coats not 2

you wont be dissapointed .

Also it might pay to mask up say 2 feet around your walls , it is a spray product , you dont want to spray the walls !! { THAT WILL HAPPEN }

Most people get into trouble by makin up their own steps , or not even reading the TDS sheets , when this happends they ring up a rep , and complain ,,, but they wont help you when they say , " did you read the instructions ? " , and you say ,, ~ well ? not really ,,

hope this is of some help ,

I do epoxy floor systems for a living !

Paul .

Please keep us updated cause I really want to go the SWEET carpet on concrete look in my basement...
Thanks and
Good Luck

The acid stain (which is what we used) is some serious business. We weren't living in the house at the time, but I doubt we could have stayed there. The chemicals hung around in the air for weeks.

We did about 1000 sq/ft worth..

I used garage grade epoxy in my basement. The basement grade epoxy didn't come in red. The stuff stinks, but I wore a respirator and ran fans for a few days, it was fine. It was about $180 for 750 sq. ft.

I'm very happy with it, and its durable.

Yeah, that's why I want to get it done before the weather gets too bad. My game room is only a small area- 132 sq. ft.!!! And it's directly off of the garage so I can close the door to the upstairs and keep the door open to the garage/outside.

Retro- I think I linked the wrong one. I'm not going to use the water-based one.

Well, I began my flooring project this weekend. I'll start a thread on it when I upload my pics tonight. I ripped the old carpet up in about 5 minutes. The problem I had was that the tack strips were hammered into the concrete and when I pulled them up, cement came with the nails. So there are tiny holes all around the room that will need to be filled. The second problem was ripping up the 1' x 1' self-adhesive tiles at the bottom of the stairs. Why in the blue hell do they make these things???!!! I spent about 45 min. ripping up 12 of them. Then I used Goof Off to remove the left over adhesive that was on the floor. The adhesive residue is still in some spots, but should come off easily when I strip the floor... so much for an easy project...
