Computer Space- how much is it worth?

I have a green 2 player version but there is only the shell and control panel. Is it even possible or worthwhile to track down all the missing parts? Or should I do a 19" monitor + 60-1 card maybe?

60-1 + LCD, then you can chop a foot or so off the back and have it not protrude as far from the wall. A skilsaw will go right through that old fiberglass.

I would be leery of that yellow one on eBay. All I'm going to say is that seller kinda has a history of Frankenstining machines. So I would wonder what may have been done to it.

Damnit, CJ, you beat me to it.

In all seriousness, though, I see nothing wrong with putting a mame pc playing just Computer Space in there until you can source the real deal...

Someone already MAMEd a gutted Computer Space - there was a thread here a while back linking to it. He did a decent job, not modifying the cabinet at all. Although the frontend he used was godawful ugly. The general consensus was "OMG NO".

Also, you're not really going to be able to run Computer Space on MAME, it has no processor, and thus really is not emulatable in the traditional sense. Although, I think someone has written a simulator.

As for a composite video monitor on Computer Space - IIRC, the video signal from the boardset is biased to have a couple volts of DC offset, as it's intended to be fed into the tube type amplifier stage. While this might work OK on some monitors, it can just as easily not work on others. You could either modify the boardset to remove the biasing voltage, or try blocking it with a capacitor. Try something like 220uf or 100uf, positive leg connected to the video signal from the game, negative leg to the video input on the TV.

That could be made into a custom urinal.

For the man who has everything...

If I can shamelessly plug my site here, you might all find some useful info.

I have been tracking surviving Computer Spaces and there are definitely more than ten yellow ones, my most recent count shows eleven and possibly twelve if Jerry Jessop would ever reply to me.

For some reason, that new yellow one didn't show up on my Selling page, I'll need to fix the script.

There is a pinball store up here in Canada that services Computer Space, they sometimes carry replacement TVs or parts for the GE TV. Worth asking them...

And you can't play Computer Space in MAME because there is no central processor and no ROM. The good news is a guy helped create a simulator of the game which is posted here:

Hope that helps.

The reason I have become interested in the machine is because it's the main story in Retro Gamer magazine this month and has an interview with Nolan Bushnal and Ted Dabney. It's really interesting. It says in the article that the first commercially released arcade machine was Galaxy Game released in September 1971.

I want a Computer Space so bad.

After reading the article I searched it up and your website came up and it's such a wealth of info and has alot of cool stuff on it. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in Computer Space :)

Thanks Luke, I try. :)

By the way, once that Retro Gamer Magazine article sells up here in Canada, I'm going to buy about six or seven copies for myself. It looks like an amazing issue (#93 for those interested)

Oh it's a great issue. It's a nice history of how it all came about and it's a 6 page story. Also has a good snes collectors guide :p

Your website it so good and I like the page with the serial numbers. Gives brilliant information on all those machines and what's happened to then. I hope I can add a machine to it one day :)

Keep up the good work because I will be checking it.

Yes, Paul did a great job on that article. There's also the 6 page article on Atari Inc. in that issue that includes more direct quotes from Ted, Nolan, and others.

It was a great issue. Just need to get one now! If only the people who ship to the UK would give me a reasonable price for one! There must be some in the UK :p
