What about computer monitor tubes? Anyone tried them? Is the resolution too different? NMSU has auctions of surplus crap every few months and always has pallets stacked with old monitors and computer junk. Sometimes they sell for $200, sometimes almost free. I do have an old Gateway 19" I might try unless I hear that it's a waste of time.

CAN it be done with the right tube....sure....will it look right....no.
The dot pitch is much finer on VGA tubes, so the image will look more like a, well, a pc monitor.
I've done it with a 13" GO7. Had to do some rerouting on the neckboard for this particular one. It looks good, but in a VGA kinda way, not CGA.
(kinda hard to explain)

No, I get exactly what you are saying. It's like MAME on the computer, just looks much better on a real arcade monitor!
