The company's newest offering, the Commodore PC64, an Intel Atom-powered PC featuring 4GB DDR3 memory, SATA 1TB HDD, HDMI output, optical drive (either DVD/CD or optional Blu-ray), and more -- all in "an exact replica" of the original beige C64 chassis.

I'm all about old Commodore stuff, retro computing, and preserving the past, but.. to me, this seems extremely pointless. What is the point of owning a C64 case with a modern computer in it? Just so it can look like a 64? I have to imagine it will be like paying a premium for an average computer, just for that look. Neat as the original keyboard is, it's extremely impractical for use with Windows/Linux/etc.

I'm and old school Commie kid, and even I think this is a pointless endeavor.

It better run all Commie games on an emulator or something -- standard! Otherwise, pointless. Where would you put it if a "real" keyboard needs to be hooked up to it? I mean...it only goes up to F8 and is missing a lot of standard keys.

I still have my C64. And as much as I played it as a kid. I never did like the keyboard layout, much less the stiffness of the keys.

Not really seeing the whole point of this. Now if they re-released a C64 with HDMI or Component out. With a built in 5 1/4 drive. Or at least have it emulate roms. Then that would be something.

But this.....it looks like one of those MODs that you see on Youtube, where a guy would put an Atom motherboard in a Nintendo System Case.

I'll go the other route... I love it! Depending on price I may pick one up... now if it was a C16 model I'd be all over it for sure!!! :D

Methinks this is hoax.... ;-)

(...for starters, you'd think Commodore (assuming they still exist)
would be promoting this rather that some gossipy on-line news rag... )

Call me cynical !

I hated the C64 then, and I still do :D

Atari 8 bit rulez !!!!

They keyboard was a JOKE on the C64.....not to mention the Basic, the floppy drive that was as fast as the Atari's tape-drive and...there wasn't even a disk operating system....

What is this going to be ? A handicapped PC or a emulation C64 ? Neither way is useful.

Mind you, that would be true for any of those 8-bit machines ....

+1

I had one and was a huge fan but I don't see the point without lots of the games preloaded.

It will be worth it if they make the hard drive sound like that old floppy drive. To load the OS you better need to type in LOAD "*",8,1

I still have an old Commodore 64/128 that I played a lot. We lots a ton of the games though, and I still feel a little bitter about that.

If it is a hoax, its a fairly ellaborate one. Looks like someone has bought the name and rights and are stuffing new stuff into the old style commodore boxes....

Its not a hoax, but this was announced back in March.

Commodore International declared bankruptcy in 1994, and the brand was soon bought by German retailer Escom, before bouncing from one Dutch firm to another. Eventually, it landed with an outfit dubbed Commodore Gaming, and apparently, they have licensed the Commodore 64 name to its latest foster parent.

That "foster parent" being Commodore USA. Original announcement (and same pictures) here:
