Commando HSS Kit Progress

I'm sorry guys... I'm a complete turd of a failure :( I have the roms, had my super solder buddy Stuffmonger over this weekend...located my pcb and had everything ready to go..... Then I couldn't find my Hss test kit :( I looked for it saturday and sunday but couldn't locate it. Its here somewhere, We've been so busy cleaning up and doing things I'm not sure where I put it or if it got moved. I'm so sorry guys :(

Any luck trying to repo in MAME with the original roms? (let me know if you need them)

Sorry, work and wedding plans have had me swamped.
I installed fraps last night to give you some videos with what I've encountered so far. I hope to have those posted tonight. They don't seem like critical issues, just the minor graphic glitches I mentioned before.
Hopefully in my next post I can also let you know if I encounter these issues in the original roms.

Ok, I had some more time to test between shifts.
I have good news on both of my sightings.
I was able to confirm the the glitch after levels 4 and 8 was due to me using the invincibility cheat, and everything was displayed correctly when I shut off the cheat.
I also checked the glitch I've seen with enemy characters flashing for a moment on the bottom of the screen. I ran the original rom in another instance of mame, and was able to verify that it also occurs there.
I made a video with mame's aviwrite feature, but will need to edit it down tonight.
Considering that it also shows up in the original rom, I wouldn't be concerned with it (it's barely noticable). Plus, I believe this may occur in the original arcade (I will have to swap the chips again to confirm).
 
Good news! I just found the hss test kit! I'm only a partial loser now, heh. It was where I left it, buried under some bills. Dunno how the heck I missed seeing it, I literally searched for 3 hours or so over the course of a couple days.

If JonnyNeedles is satisfied then I'm good with that, however itd be nice to have a little extra time to test this out. (Easy for the guy who lags to say, heh). I'll try to this installed tonight and possibly burned.

Btw, since its getting close to completion, please hold off on shipping until I can verify everyone's address. I know I have to verify Greensleeve's for sure.

I swapped the chips back to originals in my machine again tonight.
That character "glitch" I was seeing in the modified rom is also in the original game (Along the bottom of the screen. Sometimes you can see it if you don't move forward for a few seconds.)
Everything I've seen looks exactly the same as the original (keep in mind that without cheating, I might only make it to level 4 on a good day).
I think it's good!

Cool, thanks for all the feedback. Personally I like the world roms. They are a little glitchy but not enough for me to notice. I think all the commando rom versions are a little glitchy in some way. I like being able to enter a long name though

I'm really sorry guys for my bellyflop as a tester.. July is always a super hectic month for me and this year even more so. I did manage to get the socket and battery installed, just haven't had time to get the new US image rom burned and help out with testing :(

On a side note, There is a little soldering involved and the joints for the socket is really small, which made removing the 7M chip difficult if you wanted to keep it intact. I tried with my regular solder sucker but couldn't get all the solder removed so had trouble. It would have come out easily if I had clipped the legs of the chip. I ended up getting an assist from my friend Stuffmonger who has one of those $500 desoldering guns. I don't know if there is any reason to need to keep the 7M chip intact.. I just got so much flak from my arcade hacker buddies last time I clipped chip legs to install a HSS kit I decided to enlist the help from the big guns, heh.

Clip the legs... not worth the extra effort to save a 2 dollar chip

Ah ok heh. clipping the legs will make it a breeze then :) If anyone has trouble with soldering, I will gladly install the kit provided you ship me your pcb and kit + pay for return shipping.

btw, Madrits just said all the kits will be shipping monday :)

Nice. Thanks souzilla, fatherpain, and Madrits!

The sound balance and volume pots on my board are dirty and causing my volume issues (volume low, or dropping out, going up and down during gameplay). I was going to clean them when I pull the board for the new hss kit.

I purchased a can of "Electronics contact cleaner with lube" made by ECG Industrial.
It is RX500 on this sheet:
www.bentonelectronic.com/disks/parts2/ECG CHEMICALS.pdf

On the back label, under "Compatibility", it states:
"This product is not recommended for acrylic, polystyrene, or polycarbonate materials."

I don't think this applies to the material these pots are made of. What do you guys think? Should I give it a try? I guess I could replace the pots if the cleaner doesn't work.
 
Just replace the pots... a couple of bucks and 10 minutes and you won't have to worry about it again
