Commando HSS Kit Progress

I had to watch it a couple of times and I think I saw what you are talking about, but not sure.
I will try and reproduce the issue.

Can you put the original eproms back in and see if it happens still?
The version of the roms on the kit are "World" edition

You can see the trees disappear here:

Is there anything we can rule out besides the rom?
I feel that I did a nice job soldering the socket in (though that is for the nvram, which just holds the high score data, correct? That's been flawless so far).

Maybe it's a glitch in this version of the rom... or maybe it was in the original, and I never noticed.

Nonetheless, the HSK has added a lot more enjoyment to the game

In the video, (sorry about the angle. Did you put it in fullscreen?) it starts at 0:04 with the center and right side trees, then the next tree following that. Played a lot today with the kit in, and have not seen it again.
I'll swap the chips back tonight and see what happens. Should I pull out the nvram and swap that as well?

What version of the original eproms do you have? US or World?
While the nvram does save the high score table it is also used for other things as well.
Program ram and maybe graphics ram.

It could also be the nvram, the ones I sent out with the beta kits are older pulls.

The original eproms in mine are US.

I was able to replicate the tree glitch in the World rom you sent me with mame.
If you hang out by the trees you see in the video I made (around 0:04), shoot and move around, and they will disappear.

I will make another video soon, and try to capture a couple other issues.
Sometimes there is a quick graphics glitch around the character as I go under a bridge.
Also, sometimes there is a short stutter as I approach the end of a stage (Right before the enemies start to come out, and the level end music starts.)

I haven't seen these with my original chips back in, and I will continue trying to replicate in the original, and in mame.

Cool, can you try and replicate in mame with original world roms?
Shoot me an email at [email protected] and i can send them to you

Thanks again for testing

No problem, thanks for the opportunity!

I was able to replicate the disappearing trees in the original world roms. It seems you may also have to die, and restart in that area for the issue to show up.

Also, just noticed. In my US version, one of the attract screens says:
"1st bonus 10000 pts
and every 50000 pts"
According to the manual, this is correct.

In the World version attract screen (both the original, and your modified):
"1st bonus 10000 pts
and every 500000 pts"
It seems that it awards based on those values as well.
Is this really the correct setting for the world version?

Why is the World version rom 10x+ the size of the US rom?

Sounds like the original world roms have a couple of glitches.

Cant comment on the settings but sounds like the hss roms act the same as the original.
maybe someone more familiar with the different roms can comment

hmm.. I received the test kit this weekend. Would you still like me to proceed with install and test? It sounds as though the world roms have some bugs (nice to hear the bugs are in the roms and not the kit). Is it possible to utilize the US roms for the hss kit?

Tom

It is up to you.. to me they do not seem like big deals but will let the masses speak. US version only allows three character names... not sure what the other differences are

This is tough, because I really really really like the extra letters for the high score in the world version, but I would suggest using the US version, due to the bugginess of the world version. I'm getting to level 3 on most plays, and 4 occasionally.
I just played a few more games, and I was getting the bonus life at 10,000, and every 50,000 (not 500,000, like the screen says)

So, the things i've seen are:
-The guy with the mortar by the first bridge on level 1 disappears frequently.
-Disappearing trees on the first level (as described in previous post.)
-Last night, the game over sounds played, and it displayed "Player 2 game over" while no one was playing. Also the "Player 1 ready" stuck on the screen during gameplay (was not able to replicate)
-Mistake on attract screen (500,000 in place of 50,000)

These don't really distract from the gameplay too much... but they seem to take away a bit of authenticity.
The US rom version feels cleaner.

I'd like to hear from some of the others who have played using the high score kit, or hsk rom, as well.

if it minimizes the bugs, I'd like to go usa also.. even if it means just 3 letters in the hs table :)

ROM version preference. US or World. Difference appears to be World has a few minor bugs. USA only allows for 3 initials in high score table. pms sent to all on prepay list that haven't voted so far. Please let us know your preference and a big thank you to Souzilla for allowing our input :) Let's see how the votes shake down. 8 votes needed for a majority.

1. Fatherpain (USA)
2. Mxracer47 (USA)
3. Eclipse Eye
4. James in MD (USA)

USA version is the way to go. Might be fairly simple to modify it to enable the 10 char names.... I haven't looked, so I'm only guessing, but on some games (e.g. Crazy Climber) it's as simple as changing one byte.

Looks like US wins... I will take a look and see if the code is transferable. Should not be too big of an effort. Please keep testing the world version in case there are any bugs in my code that I can fix as well
