Commando HSS Kit Progress

Dude Im up for testing, Im pretty good at Commando and can play on a credit for almost 45 minutes, clearing all 8 levels three times over. It used to give me blisters on my finger back in the day, Im very familiar with the game.

I also have full soldering skills and tooled up for the job.

Clear all 8 levels! I'm lucky to get past the first bridge.

Cool... looks like i have 2 testers. I will send the stuff out tomorrow. Please pm me your addresses

Please only testers in the US... I am shipping out the parts at my expense and also want them to get to the testers quickly. I appreciate the people outside the US wanting to help but I can't do it... sorry

ok, so it is pretty much ready... I just have to write up the instructions and do a little more testing. I would like a couple of people to help test it, but I would like the following people to fit this criteria

1. Have time to test it over the next week or two
2. Have already or can quickly socket the ram on the second board in the stack (picture attached)
3. Are pretty good at commando so they can go through a bunch of levels and exercise more of the code than I can

How the testing will work
1. For the first two people I will send both eproms and a DS1225 nvram with a socket (likely pulls, but ok for testing purposes).
2. When these are ready for primetime you wil receive the final version mailed by Slava
3. I will email you the instructions when they are complete, hopefully this weekend

Any takers?

What about if there willing to pay?

Missed this thread until just today.

I would never use the freeplay (prefer to use quarters), so that's not important to me. As long as I can keep it on quarters, that's fine.

As for installing this - if it requires soldering, that pretty much lets me out.

Don't own the tools, no experience with it, and don't want to ruin anything.

Not sure what that means at this point, but I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would prefer not to solder.

Any thoughts? Tom?

Either way there was going to be soldering involved, that was a given from the beginning.
Most of these board have the z80 and the ram soldered directly to the board. Not too many other options for saving high scores without a daughter board on the z80 or replacing the ram with nvram. The approach I took means you would need to socket the 28 pin ram instead of the 40 pin z80.

This is the reason I did not start this until the pre-payments were in, to make sure people knew what they were getting and would not back out after I put hours of time into this.

I am not in the middle of the money issue so if you want a refund you can work with Fatherpain and Madrits on that.

No worries Orrimarrko... I will happily take care of the installation, if you send your pcb my way :) If this option sounds ok, drop me a pm and I'll provide my mailing address :) However, if anyone wishes a refund on their prepayment, lmk and I will honor my word :)

Hi guys,
I got the kit in the mail today, installed it, and just put the boards back in the cabinet.

It's been a couple years since i've soldered, so I was a little timid going in.
I picked up a desoldering iron at radioshack today for the job, and it made things much easier (the braid and solder sucker weren't cutting it.)!

Everything seems to be working great at first glance (I do have a sound issue, with the volume going up and down. It's an ongoing issue, and while it seems more frequent now, i'm sure it's unrelated.)
I tried with coins and freeplay, both working good.
Scores were intact after powering down, and back up.

I'll keep everyone posted as I play it some more.
Thanks to everyone involved!

I had some strange graphical glitches earlier.
At one point on level 1, at the start of a life, "Player 1 Ready" was on the screen during entire gameplay. Continued for the following 2 lives until game over, but I could not replicate after that.
I also noticed some of the trees disappearing as I approached them. Think I captured a video of this. I'll try and upload it.
Sometimes a distorted block would quickly appear when passing under a bridge.

I did make it to level 3, and have a new high score of 80,900, which I feel better about.

You can see the trees disappear here:

Is there anything we can rule out besides the rom?
I feel that I did a nice job soldering the socket in (though that is for the nvram, which just holds the high score data, correct? That's been flawless so far).

Maybe it's a glitch in this version of the rom... or maybe it was in the original, and I never noticed.

Nonetheless, the HSK has added a lot more enjoyment to the game
