Color Vinyl Artwork: What color to paint underneath?

So I am working on getting this Galaga '88 cabinet done, and I will be painting the cabinet soon. I am planning on having full color vinyl solvent printed side art on the sides, what color should I paint them to prep the surface?

White? Black? Medium Grey? Just clear coat the wood?

I am hoping that Phet and Rich will weigh in on this.

You will almost always want to paint the cabinet the same color as the background of the artwork. That way the inevetable nick or scratch won't be quite so obvoius.

Id probably find out what kind of vinyl is being used.
since vinyl isnt always very opaque Id recomend a white primer
so it would help brighten the colors of the print.
Over say painting it Black.

Well, I was planning on having you print it, so I will go with your recommendation. I was thinking I would do white too. What type of vinyl would you use if I asked you to print it?
