A customer bought some CoinUp's to install in some of his games without Free Play options. He read the instruction manual and connected up the Ground pin to the control panel common ground, connected the P1 and P2 Start pins to their prospective "hot" wires, and connected the coin switch pin to one of the coin switch "hot" wires. He then set the dip switches to Enable, 1 coin per play, Normal pulse - didn't work. Tried it on long pulse - didn't work. Called me.

I verified the wiring, shorted it a bit in case of wire resistance, and even connected the +5 pin to +5 (even though the P1 wire measured a good +5.11 that should have been enough to run the little board) - still didn't work. tried another CoinUp with the same result.

What is interesting is that when the +5 wire is connected, the coin counter engages and stays engaged while the coin switch wire is connected. If the +5 wire is not connected, it doesn't. Doesn't work either way. Tried it on both coin switches.

I checked to make sure the coin switch ground and the control panel ground were the same (in case that mattered) and they were. Coin switch works when triggered, and start buttons work when credits are added manually.

So - why is it not working? is there something else - maybe a coin multiplier board like some Pacs and Galagas have - that is keeping it from working? Anyone have any ideas? I go back there in a few days and would like a few things to try...

Did you pm the guy who made them? He's a member here, isn't he?

Super pac is strange when it comes to coin input. I wired mine up per Bobs free play hack and it would lock the game up occasionally. I figured out that you had to tap the start button very quickly for it to work. Any more than a quick snap and the game would lock up and it had to be turned off and back on.
Does it have any other settings other than normal and long pulse? No, super pac does not use any type of coin multiplier board. The only one I know of was used on pacs that went overseas.

Wow that is weird...the only games that haven't been able to user the CoinUp thus far are those that use a scan matrix for their buttons.

I will look into this...

On Midway coin doors I pull the coin mech, bend the coin return limit arm so the coin return button travels but won't over-travel and jam. Then mount a micro switch so the coin return pushes it and connect the NO contacts to the coin drop switch.

I also oil the coin return button cylinder so it presses easily. That's a simple, cheap and reversible way to modify the game for free play when a switch setting isn't available.
