I just pulled the rusted husk of a coin door off my Black Widow to begin bringing it back to pretty, I flipped it over, and 3 quarters fell out the mechs.

1979, 1983, and 1984.

Who put them in there? Did they never leave their brass prison? Did the person putting them in never get to play?

It's the little things for me on why this hobby is a fun time.

Holy shit that is literally the worst coin door I've ever seen. I believe I'd be chucking that one in the trash and finding a much nicer one. Even with the sandblasting and powder coating, which I used to do exclusively, you'd still see pitting everywhere.

Yeah I have this donor from a parted out Pole Position. I'm going to transfer mechs and wiring to it.

I just want to see if I can salvage this one anyway.

There's signs of life, pulse is low, we need IVs, stat! 😩
She's barely breathing but it's there! Let's just see what a very long bath in Evapo-Rust will do. 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like quitter talk to me

Yeah, I got a batch of coin doors from a retired operator some months back. There were quarters stuck in them, weird tin tokens and all sorts of crap still in the buckets.

I've seen worse than this

Economically speaking, i found that truck bed liner (raptor liner in particular) covered coin doors well. The only issue is that the texture left is obviously nothing like the original. On the other hand it does cover up lots of imperfections and gives you a clean look.

In my case i had a ton of coin doors and my only regret was not buying the raptor liner kit that connects to your compressor. I spent just as much on smaller cans as their basic kit costs but if you are only doing one or two doors, the can is just fine.

After an hour bathing in Evapo-Rust. We're settling in for the long haul on this one.

This is 100% salvagable. I repaired those doors i mentioned earlier in phases, Doing about 6 of them at a time. I opted to leave them in a bucket filled with vinegar; leaving some in the vat for over a day. I had doors that looked way worse than this.

Yessir, I'm going to let these bathe for a good day. I agree with you on their salvageable nature. Seeing shine already on that one especially.

I love finding coins in games.

Sometimes they are in the bottom of the cab, coin box, coin mechs...

Whenever I find them, I leave them in the coin box.

Then years later when I pull the coin box out for some reason, I think of those coins some kid put in there years ago.

Progress update:

This is going better than expected. I still want to leave them overnight then I'll soak the door frame itself too. 👏🏻

Good stuff:
Coin return bezels and flaps: Intact
Coin mech entry slots / coin return buttons: Intact
Came with $0.75 - Excellent!

Try to fix it. What do you have to lose?
