Finally fired up the Cleopatra after the restore and it's acting strange, maybe I have something wired wrong, not sure.

The game powers on and goes into attract mode but I can't add any credits to the game and I also can't start a game. There are already a number of credits that show, when I hit the start game button the chimes sound but the ball doesn't eject and it doesn't seem to come out if attract mode (score doesn't go to zero).

I am able to get the system to go into test and all the lights seem to work as well as all th solenoids.

I must say that prior to tearing this down I had replaced all the board connectors and did the grounds mods. It was in good working order prior to the restore.

So, anyone have some suggestions or ideas on where to start?

VB,

Tilt switches are normally open....slam switches normally closed.

If it were the slam switches, the MPU wouldn't boot. You would just get strobbing score displays. So you can rule that out. It's worth looking at the tilt switches though just to confirm.

I'd check continuity of the wiring from the coin door to connector A1-J6 to start with. The start button runs through that small connector (and the slam switch too). Possible you swapped a couple wires when you repinned the connectors? The test button also goes through this connector, so the coin door is "talking" to the MPU in some fashion.

How do you have it set to add credits? Rigged for freeplay in some manner, or using the coin mech? Can you add credits?

When you hit the start button and hear the chime....does the number of credits decrease?

How's the batteries on the MPU board? By chance could there be "garbage" in the memory? Go into test and clear & reprogram the scores and all book-keeping functions.

If you have installed a seperate battery holder, be sure to test the batteries.

examiner, funny you mention adding credits, it won't at the moment... and pushing the start button gets me nothing. Adding credits is usually done from opening the coin door.

Ken, all the mods have been made from pinrepair, grounds, etc. It also appears to not allow me to clear the information as holding the rest button on the board seems to be doing nothing.

I'll make a better effort to trace some wires tonight.. and post back, thanks.

VB,

I'll be interested to see what you find...my Pinball Pool does the exact same thing...just decided to be a pain one day.I haven't had time to go poking around with it.

VB,

Try re-seating/replacing the game PROM on the motherboard. This could cause funky problems like that.

Also be 100% sure that you replaced all the connectors, especially then ones on the driver board. I believe there is a connector on the far right bottom of the driver board that if not connected would cause this problem.

A1j6 pins traced out correctly.

All the rework I did happened before I undertook the restoration and was played numerous time before the tear down so I have to say that the connectors and pins are good.

Could this happen from a solenoid or switch under the playfield not wired correctly?

EDIT

Meant to attach schematic..

VB,
Love the pinball section here ,but when it comes to system one all anybody ever wants to talk about is connectors.

The connectors are 30 years old and were corroded when they were replaced so it does make good sense to start there...

But since I've already replaced them all that project can be checked off the list.

VB,

The game is acting like it's dead. I checked the slam switch on the front door and the ball roll tilt and that is intact/closed.

Other ideas?

Just traced each line of a1j6 and all are good. Could a bad test switch cause this?

I was messing with the credit switches and got it to take a credit and all of a sudden it was working so I took the credit switches apart looking for the cause and found nothing.

Now I can't get it to take credits anymore and it seems dead again...

Argh!!! Anyone have some experience with the system 1 credit switches, etc?

Try disconnecting the credit switches. I've heard of a stuck ON credit switch causing this. Look real close to see if the wires are shorted out, hell use a multimeter on those switches to make sure they're open. Also, if you've got the switch wired to the wrong post it'll do that.

Totally disassembled both credit switches and seems to be good. I even just unsoldered the switches themselves and left the wires bare then fired it up, same situation. I never unsoldered the switch leads so I know they are correct.

It seems to be giving me different symptoms.

When I power it on now I am able to add a credit up to 15, it won't go higher, but still acts as though it is crediting.

When I push the start button, I get the chimes like its starting a new game but it never goes into player 1 mode, still appears to be in attract mode, flippers don't work, etc.

Hmmm. IF all your connectors are good now and you're getting 5volts on your main pcb, It sounds like you're having the dreaded spider chip issues.

It maxes out at 15 credits.

When you turn on the machine and the displays come on after 5 seconds, do you hear the click of the both the relays pulling in?
